Former President John Mahama

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has advised the party faithful to ensure they take full participation in the 2023 limited voter registration exercise.

Mr Mahama said every NDC member must take the exercise seriously as it is one of the steps to ensure the party returns to power in 2024.

According to him, Ghanaians are looking to the party to come and save the country from the current difficulties imposed by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a Facebook live session on Wednesday, September 6, the former President said the party and its membership cannot fail Ghanaians in this regard.

“At this point, let me encourage my comrades in the NDC to put aside every other thing or activity and let’s give our maximum attention and focus to the upcoming exercise. Let me urge all my fellow citizens, especially the youth, to take this exercise seriously. It is your opportunity to hold your leaders accountable. It is about your rights; It is about your future! It is about our dear nation, Ghana.”

John Mahama

Mr Mahama also noted that the limited registration exercise also allows for the replacement of lost voter ID cards and an opportunity to transfer vote from one’s previous polling station to one’s current polling station and therefore encourages all Ghanaians to take advantage of the opportunity.

Mahama criticized the NPP for Impoverishing Ghanaians

President Mahama also underscored that Ghana is currently grappling with a severe economic crisis more than ever before, which has resulted in the daily cost of living skyrocketing and job opportunities becoming more difficult by the day.

He recounted the hopelessness that exists among the Ghanaian people including the youth, the elderly, drivers, market women, civil servants, security personnel, teachers, journalists, nurses, and doctors and argued that such a dire situation calls for urgent action, and the most powerful tool in this regard according to Mr Mahama is the right to vote.

He charged that President Akufo-Addo and his administration had failed to address the severe economic problems that had been imposed on the people of Ghana by misusing the country’s limited resources and lavishing money on creature comforts rather than erecting the vital infrastructure that the nation needed to grow and create jobs.

According to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress the upcoming limited voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission is, therefore, an opportunity for Ghanaians who do not have voter ID Cards to part-take in the process towards making their voices heard and ultimately shaping the future of Ghana.

“As a people, it is the starting point in our quest to bring about real change in our country. You and I are responsible for using our votes wisely, holding our leaders accountable, and demanding the change we desperately need. It is the surest way to secure our democracy.”

John Mahama

To vote for the NDC in that key election on December 7, 2024, Mr. Mahama urged all Ghanaians who do not have voter identification cards to obtain one.

The Electoral Commission has declared that the process of registering voters for the 2023 election would begin on Tuesday, September 12, and end on Monday, October 2.

The exercise will be held at the Commission’s district offices around the nation, the Commission noted in the aforementioned notice.
