In a fervent call to action, the Eastern Regional Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Vice President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia to publicly declare his stance on the Anti-LGBTQIA+ Bill before the conclusion of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The Caucus in a statement issued by its Coordinator, Alhaji Issah Mohammed Sani, representing the Muslim Community and Ghanaians at large underscored the urgency for the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to declare his stance on the bill amid what it described as the swirling speculations regarding the government’s stance on the controversial bill.
Citing what it described as Dr Bawumia’s vocal involvement in previous public debates, the Coordinator for the Caucus highlighted instances where the Vice President articulated his positions on critical national issues.
Notably, Mr Mohammed Sani referenced the Vice President’s forthright statements on tax policies and the handling of illegal mining activities and expressed surprise over his complete and conspicuous silence on the Human Rights and Family Values Bill, which has become a matter of immense public concern.
“In view of these developments coupled with the deafening silence of the vice president, Ghanaians, especially the Muslim Community want to know the position of H.E. Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia on the Anti-LGBTQIA+ Bill”

Furthermore, the Caucus Coordinator, Alhaji Issah Mohammed Sani commended the National Democratic Congress flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama for unequivocally declaring his opposition to the LGBTQIA+ agenda and further voicing his support for the Anti-Gay Bill.
He strongly asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama’s public stance on the bill resonates with the overwhelming sentiment of the Ghanaian populace, as evidenced by a survey conducted by Global InfoAnalytics in 2023, which indicated widespread support for the bill.

The Eastern Regional Zongo Caucus of the opposition National Democratic Congress while chastising the Vice President over his silence on the Anti-Gay Bill, also bemoaned what it deemed as the divergent views expressed on the Anti-Gay Bill by leading members of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
According to the Caucus even though the Human Rights and Family Values Bill received overwhelming support from both Caucuses in Parliament during its passage, the recent memo submitted to President Akufo-Addo by the Finance Ministry, which indicated reservations about the bill’s economic ramifications on the country makes it difficult to belief whether the ruling party is committed to its assent.
Against this backdrop, the Caucus expressed concern over Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s silence, particularly given his prominent role within the government.
The Eastern Regional Coordinator of the National Democratic Congress Zongo Caucus, Alhaji Issah Mohammed Sani thus urged Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to break his silence and clarify his position on the bill, especially considering his identity as a Muslim leader.
Mr Mohammed Sani concluded his statement by stressing the need for transparency and decisive leadership in addressing issues relating to the activities of the LGBTQIA+ community in the country.
He strongly asserted that the declaration of the Vice President’s position on the Bill would dispel rumours regarding the purported influence of the LGBTQIA+ community on the ruling new Patriotic Party and the Vice President’s presidential bid.
