A group of youth organisers of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region have vehemently refuted recent assertions claiming widespread support among constituency youth organizers in the region for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as a potential running mate to Vice President Dr Mahmudu Bawumia.
The group in a statement strongly dismissed the purported endorsement of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and current Energy Minister for the ruling party’s Vice-Presidential position.
“We wish to address the recent press statement regarding alleged widespread support for Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh for the position of running mate.
“It’s important to clarify that this assertion does not accurately represent the sentiments of the majority of youth organisers in the Ashanti Region”

Dismissing the claims as the opinions of a few individuals rather than a reflection of the broader sentiments of youth organisers in the region, the statement highlighted Article 12 (b) of the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which delineates the process for selecting a running mate.
The group emphasized the constitutional prerogative of the Presidential Candidate to select a Vice-Presidential candidate in consultation with the National Council of the party, and further stressed the importance of upholding such democratic principles within the party.
According to the group of youth organisers, the selection of a Vice-Presidential candidate is a prerogative vested in the Presidential Candidate, who is expected to consult with the National Council of the party.
The statement indicated that any attempt by youth organisers to influence or pressure the Vice President and the party’s flagbearer in the running mate selection processes would contravene the democratic principles and the established procedures of the party.
Requirements of a Running Mate
Moreover, the statement by the group of the ruling party’s youth organizers in the Ashanti Region underscored the qualities deemed essential for a Vice-Presidential candidate, including humility, widespread respect, national appeal, and popularity among Ghanaians.
The group thus called on the leadership of the party and the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to consider such factors carefully before finalizing the choice of a running mate to ensure maximum support from party members and the general populace.

In a show of solidarity with the party’s leadership, the youth organisers of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti region urged all members to extend their support and prayers to the Presidential Candidate during the processes leading to the selection and naming of the party’s running mate for the December 7 polls.
They also emphasized the need for unity within the party and adherence to democratic values, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.
The statement concluded by emphasizing the importance for the party leadership to uphold democratic principles and the constitutional process for selecting a vice-presidential candidate.
The group of the youth organisers in the Ashanti Region also called for unity and support within the ruling party as the party prepare for the upcoming elections.
The statement was jointly issued by Nana Sarpong, Youth Organiser of Kumawu; Boitey Kwasi Dickson, Youth Organiser of Juaben; Gideon Okyere Darko, Youth Organizer of Offinso North; Prince Boateng, Youth Organiser of Bosomtwi; Duggan Bright, Youth Organizer of New Edubiase; and Bright Nyampong, Youth Organizer of Obuase West.
