FAO Highlights AI's Potential to Transform Agrifood Systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the ongoing digital revolution are poised to fundamentally reshape global agrifood systems, according to QU Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Speaking at the Business Federations of the G7 (B7) meeting in Rome, Qu emphasized the urgent need to ensure that these transformations benefit all populations and address global challenges. “Artificial Intelligence is not just a technological shift but is driving a fundamental economic and social transformation at the broadest level,” Qu stated.

Qu noted FAO’s recognition of AI’s potential to deliver significant benefits across various sectors, particularly in agriculture. The organization’s focus is on leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and sustainability in food production, distribution, and consumption.

Qu highlighted several key areas where digital agriculture, driven by AI, can bring about revolutionary changes. One significant area is the improvement of pricing data. AI provides farmers and stakeholders with real-time pricing information, enabling them to make better market decisions and enhance their profitability. This access to up-to-date pricing data helps optimize the sale of agricultural products, ensuring that farmers can achieve the best possible returns for their efforts.

Another crucial impact of AI in agriculture is its ability to minimize food loss and waste. Advanced analytics and predictive models can accurately forecast demand and optimize supply chains, ensuring more food reaches consumers rather than being wasted. By analyzing patterns and trends, AI helps in better planning and resource allocation, significantly reducing the amount of food that is lost or discarded during production, processing, and distribution.

AI also plays a vital role in enhancing food safety. AI technologies can monitor various stages of food production and processing to ensure that safety standards are met. By detecting potential contamination risks early and maintaining strict quality controls, AI helps reduce the incidence of foodborne illnesses and ensures that consumers receive healthier food products. This leads to increased consumer confidence and trust in the food supply chain.

Adoption of Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Furthermore, AI stimulates the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. By promoting the use of better seeds, efficient fertilizers, and environmentally friendly farming methods, AI boosts productivity while preserving natural resources. Sustainable practices not only enhance the long-term viability of agriculture but also contribute to the overall health of the environment. AI-driven solutions help farmers implement these practices effectively, leading to more resilient and eco-friendly farming systems.

The event, held at the headquarters of Italy’s main business association, Confindustria, brought together leaders from the main business and industrial federations of the G7 members and the European Union. This year, Italy holds the G7 presidency, and the B7 meeting’s recommendations are presented to the G7 presidency annually. High-profile attendees included Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, and numerous CEOs from international private companies.

During a session focused on global cooperation, Qu was joined by Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Both leaders discussed the importance of cross-border collaboration to maximize the benefits of AI and other digital innovations in agriculture.

To ensure these innovations have a broad and positive impact, FAO is working closely with various stakeholders, including governments, academia, the private sector, civil society, and international organizations. Qu stressed the need for a robust, targeted, and coherent strategy, implemented in synergy and aligned with ethical principles.

An essential aspect of this transformation is addressing energy consumption within agrifood systems. Qu pointed out that decarbonizing by 2050 is “simply not possible” without significant changes in how energy is used in agriculture. The FAO is advocating for a comprehensive approach to energy use, which includes increasing energy efficiency and integrating renewable energy sources into agrifood systems.

Qu also called on private-sector actors to elevate their climate action ambitions and demonstrate greater accountability towards their supply chains and the communities they impact. He urged businesses to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the global effort to combat climate change.

The FAO Director-General’s remarks at the B7 meeting underscored the transformative potential of AI in agriculture. By improving efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting sustainability, AI can play a crucial role in addressing some of the most pressing global challenges. However, realizing this potential requires coordinated efforts and responsible practices from all stakeholders involved. The future of agrifood systems, driven by AI, holds promise for a more sustainable and equitable world.
