Attorney-General Urged to Resign Amidst Allegations of Misconduct

Godfred Yeboah Dame

The Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari Esq. has called for the immediate resignation of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame over serious allegations of misconduct.

In strongly worded remarks, Madam Mogtari criticised the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame for his silence and inability to address the allegations made against him directly.

She emphasised that the accusations are not merely against the Attorney-General’s department but target him personally, implicating his integrity and professional ethics.

“The allegations raised by the accused person involve criminality, violations of the   LEGAL PROFESSION (PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AND ETIQUETTE) RULES 2020 (L.I 2423) and the code of prosecutors. He MUST answer the allegations himself”.

Madam Mogtari, while underscoring the gravity of the situation, noted that the allegations against the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame involve breaches of the legal profession and the code of prosecutors are crucial to maintaining the integrity and trust in the legal profession.

She emphasized that failure on the part of the Attorney-General to respond directly to the damning allegations goes a long way to undermining the office he occupies and further calls for alarm, hence the need for Mr Dame to speak on the matter or resign with immediate effect.

The former Deputy Minister of Transport under the erstwhile Mahama’s administration also underscored the National Democratic Congress’s commitment to vigorously pursue the matter until a satisfactory resolution is achieved.

She stressed that until the party gets the right and the appropriate actions on the conduct of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, regarding the trial of its Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the opposition party would not give up.

Accusations of Manipulation and Bias

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency, Honorable Samuel Nartey George in an earlier remarks launched a scathing critique against the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament, in his critique, vehemently accused the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame of being a “judicial hatchet man” and “persecutor-in-chief” for President Akufo-Addo’s administration, suggesting a deep-seated bias and manipulation within the judicial system.

The Ningo-Prampram lawmaker further asserted that the Attorney General’s tactics involve coercing accused individuals into testifying against others, a method he claimed is not novel but rather a standard operating procedure of Mr Dame.

Honorable George cited perceived instances during the National Communications Authority’s (NCA) case, alleging that those familiar with it would recognize the pattern which the Attorney-General leveraged accused persons to incriminate others to advance his political and legal agendas.

In addition, Honorable Samuel Nartey George alleged that the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame’s success in the legal arena is less about his knowledge of the law and more about his relationships with judges.

He emphasized that knowing the judges instead of the law is the stock in trade of Mr Godfred Dame, adding that the outcome of the cases Mr Dame supervises are mostly influenced by his personal connections rather than legal merit.

The opposition party legislator concluded by asserting that the departure of Mr Dame’s predecessor, the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under President Akufo-Addo’s first term, Madam Gloria Akuffo was prompted by her disagreement with the direction the Ministry was taking.

He emphasized that the exit of Madam Gloria Akuffo was a silent protest against the practices that have since become more pronounced under Mr Dame’s leadership.

The call for Mr Dame’s resignation and criticisms comes in the wake of accusations levelled against him that suggest his involvement in criminal activities and violations of professional conduct regulations in the Ambulance trial of the Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
