Israel Deals Final Blow To Aid Operations In Gaza

Palestinian patients fearing an Israeli ground operation are helped to flee Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.

Deir el-Balah, once a rare bastion of relative stability amid the chaos, is now upended, with its infrastructure—the lifeline for countless displaced families and aid workers alike—rendered inoperative.

This area, which had become a critical hub for humanitarian aid after Israeli ground invasions forced relocations earlier this year, now faces a new and devastating challenge.

The recent wave of evacuation orders in the area has cast a shadow of despair over the Palestinian population and undermined what little hope remains.

The United Nations said it has been forced to pause aid operations in Gaza after Israel ordered mass evacuation of Deir el-Balah, where the UN had based its operations centre after relocating from Rafah when Israeli forces launched a ground invasion earlier this year.

Reacting to the situation, Alexandra Saieh of Save the Children stated that it has become “practically impossible” to operate in Gaza.

“The so-called evacuation orders that Israel has issued this month in Deir el-Balah may be the final blow to the aid operations in Gaza,” Saieh told a news agency.

Saieh added, “It is the only area with any sort of infrastructure intact, and these evacuation orders have completely upended the aid hub that was set up in there.”

Saieh said setting up aid operations was not like “turning an on and off button.”

“You have to set up predictable supply lines. You have to find a location that has some semblance of security. Of course, nowhere in Gaza is safe, but this is why these operations are just collapsing.

“Our staff has been displaced. The staff of other aid organisations has been displaced. Warehouses that are storing critical aid supplies are now inaccessible.”

OCHA Paint Grim Picture Of Evacuation Surge In Gaza

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in its latest situation report disclosed that Israel’s military issued five mass evacuation orders in six days last week; the largest number of orders for the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians issued in a single week since the start of the war on Gaza.

The five orders issued by the Israeli military between Monday and Saturday last week bring the total number of forced evacuations issued so far in August to 16.

OCHA said that almost 90 percent of the entire area of the Gaza Strip has now been placed under orders to evacuate by Israel and the latest round of orders is “further worsening the humanitarian crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of people.”

The office added that the most recent orders for people to flee Deir el-Balah have also displaced staff from various UN agencies and aid organisations, “severely hindering their ability to deliver essential support and services” to the people of Gaza.

It said that evacuation orders and hostilities in close proximity to hospitals and medical points continue to place these vital facilities at risk of becoming non-functional due to insecurity and lack of safe access for patients, ambulances, and health partners to resupply them.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed that it is expanding a ground invasion of the outskirts of Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.

It released footage of its soldiers and armoured vehicles pushing deeper amid increasing evacuation orders, reporting that it has launched over 100 air strikes in the enclave in the past two weeks.

The Israeli army also said its forces destroyed a 700-metre (2,300-foot) tunnel and claim to have found weapons, including anti-tank shells.

The situation calls for not just immediate relief but also a sustained effort to address the root causes of the conflict and to ensure that aid can reach those in desperate need.

The destruction of hope in Gaza demands a renewed commitment to both humanitarian assistance and long-term solutions, lest the suffering of an already beleaguered population be further compounded by the collapse of essential support structures.
