Security Analyst Addresses Concerns Over Galamsey Crisis

Mr. Adib Saani Security Analyst

Illegal small-scale mining, known as “galamsey,” has been one of Ghana’s most enduring challenges, especially concerning its detrimental effects on the environment and the country’s water bodies.

Security analyst Mr. Adib Saani provided an insightful analysis of the situation. Mr. Saani painted a stark picture of the complex dynamics at play, including the involvement of influential politicians, the lack of commitment from law enforcement, and the interference that undermines efforts to combat this national crisis.

Moreover, Mr. Saani stressed the gravity of the Galamsey crisis. He pointed out that, the effects of illegal mining have devastated vital resources, such as water bodies and forests, to the extent that the very lifeblood of the nation is threatened. In a sobering remark, he stated:

This powerful statement underscored the environmental and existential threat posed by Galamsey. The degradation of natural resources not only affects current generations but will have long-term consequences for the country’s sustainability.

One of the critical questions raised in the discussion was whether galamseyers have overpowered Ghana’s security forces, including the police and military. Mr. Saani shifted the focus, emphasizing the complicity of powerful individuals in enabling this illegal activity. He remarked:

“The question I think should have been asked is who are the galamseyers? And they are the same people you just mentioned. I mean, a lot of the politicians, the most powerful politicians are complicit in this whole galamsey menace.”

According to Mr. Saani, the involvement of politicians in galamsey makes it incredibly difficult to combat. Their influence and interference at various levels of law enforcement prevent any meaningful progress. Mr. Saani argued that the root of the problem has undermined efforts to uphold the law and protect the environment.

“If We Want to end Galamsey today, We’ll be able to do So flawlessly.”

Mr. Saani went on to discuss the lack of commitment from those in power as the primary reason for the persistence of Galamsey. Mr. Saani contended that if there were genuine political will, the problem could be resolved quickly. He shared a revealing comment from a military friend:

“A military friend of mine said the other day that if the military is given the chance to go in without any political interference, galamsey would cease to exist before 48 hours.”

This highlights the potential effectiveness of the security forces if they were allowed to act without interference. The simplicity of the solution, as outlined by Mr. Saani, contrasts sharply with the complex reality of political meddling that hampers the fight against galamsey.

A recurring theme in Mr. Saani’s analysis is the detrimental effect of political interference on law enforcement efforts. He explained how security forces, even when they detect illegal mining operations, are often instructed to leave the site without taking action due to pressure from higher authorities. He described the situation as follows:

“They get to a mining site, which is operating illegally. But a call would be made to another person and another and another, and in the end, they are asked to leave without taking action.”

The Role of Government in the Fight Against Galamsey

This interference, according to Mr. Saani, is one of the primary reasons why Galamsey continues to thrive despite the government’s stated commitment to fighting it. The fact that illegal miners can operate with impunity, protected by influential figures, makes it impossible to eradicate the problem through conventional law enforcement measures.

Mr. Saani was unequivocal in labeling galamsey as a criminal activity that poses a serious national security threat. He stressed that the actions of illegal miners are not just environmental offenses but crimes that should be addressed with the full force of the law. He stated:

“What they are doing is criminal. It’s a national security issue, and once it poses an existential threat to the security of the state, whatever means the state would use, they are supposed to do so, even if it involves the use of the military.”

Mr. Adib Saani Security Analyst

Mr. Saani’s perspective is clear, the severity of galamsey requires a response that goes beyond ordinary environmental regulations. It must be treated as a matter of national security, demanding a robust and decisive law enforcement response.

Mr.  Saani reiterated the need for genuine political commitment to end galamsey. He lamented the absence of such commitment, despite the obvious solutions available to the government and security forces. He noted: “Where is the commitment? There is no commitment.”

Mr. Saani’s call for action is a stark reminder that the fight against Galamsey cannot succeed without the full backing of those in power. As long as political interference continues, and as long as those involved in galamsey enjoy protection from influential figures, the problem will persist. Mr. Saani’s analysis of the Galamsey crisis offers a sobering insight into the dynamics at play. His perspective highlights the complicity of politicians, the lack of commitment to enforcing the law, and the detrimental effect of political interference on security operations.

It is clear that solving the galamsey problem requires more than just rhetoric; it demands a concerted effort from all stakeholders, free from the influence of those who benefit from illegal mining. Only then can Ghana hope to reclaim its environment and protect its future.
