North Korean Diplomat Reiterates Country’s Support For Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov welcomes his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui, in Moscow, Russia, November 1, 2024.

North Korean Foreign Minister, Choe Son Hui has reiterated Pyongyang’s support “for the just fight of Russia’s military and people to defend their country’s sovereign rights and security interests” in Ukraine.

This came as she met with Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

Praising the role played by North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin, she said, “Our traditional, historically friendly relations, which have travelled the tested path of history, today … are rising to a new level of relations of invincible military comradeship.”

Choe disclosed that the North Korean leader authorized significant assistance to Russia and its people as soon as the special military operation began, “without regard to anyone.”

She said that North Korea had no doubt that under Putin’s “wise leadership” the Russian army and people would “achieve a great victory in their sacred struggle to protect the sovereign rights and security interests of their state.” “And we also assure that until the day of victory we will firmly stand alongside our Russian comrades,” Choe added.

Lavrov spoke of the “very close ties” between the two countries’ militaries and said this enabled them to solve important security tasks together.

He noted that relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have reached record high levels in the past few years, thanks to the two leaders’ efforts.

“Over the past few years, bilateral relations between our countries have reached a record high point, owing to the special attention paid by President [Vladimir] Putin and Chairman of State Affairs [of North Korea] Kim Jong Un to these relations.”

Sergey Lavrov

He added that dialogue between the two countries was propelled to a brand-new level following the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty at a historic summit in Pyongyang.“The partnership is essentially strategic indeed, including in terms of how intensive the political dialogue has been,” Lavrov continued.

He described the June summit as a “very important stage,” preceded by what he termed “a very significant visit” by North Korea’s Kim at the Vostochny spaceport in Russia’s Far East last year.

“And, according to my calculations, this is our sixth meeting in the past one year,” Lavrov told the North Korean foreign minister.

“We are deeply grateful to our Korean friends for their principled position regarding the events that have now unfolded in Ukraine as a result of the West’s course of advancing NATO to the east and encouraging an openly racist regime to exterminate everything Russian.”

Sergey Lavrov

The two did not address statements by leaders in Ukraine, South Korea and their Western allies that Pyongyang had deployed some 10,000 North Korean soldiers to Russia to fight in Ukraine

US, South Korea Accused Of Plotting Nuclear Strike Against North Korea

Moreover, Choe also accused the US and South Korea of plotting a nuclear strike against her country.

Choe told Lavrov that the situation on the Korean Peninsula could become “explosive” any moment, given the threats from Washington and Seoul, but did not provide any evidence to back her allegations.

She said North Korea needed to strengthen its nuclear arsenal and perfect its readiness to deliver a retaliatory nuclear strike if necessary.

Russia, along with China, has blocked U.S.-led efforts at the U.N. Security Council to tighten sanctions on North Korea over its recent missile testing, which intensified after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Russia also vetoed a U.N. resolution to extend the mandate of monitors in March, in a move that effectively abolished oversight by U.N. experts of Security Council sanctions against North Korea.
