The recent clashes between miners and soldiers at Obuasi, involving AngloGold Ashanti’s concession, with 8 civilians confirmed dead, have left a significant mark on Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.“

Dr. Ken Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey has expressed grave concerns about the incident, emphasizing the need for a swift investigation to ensure justice in the situation.

Dr. Ashigbey highlighted the necessity of an impartial probe into the death incident, stating;

“We believe that we need to have an independent investigation that gets to hear both sides, even criminals have rights. And then once we establish what the truth is, which Ghanaians deserve, then the right thing is done; the right punishment is exacted to whoever it is that has done wrong.”

He stressed that a comprehensive investigation would help establish the facts and hold those responsible accountable, thereby reinforcing the principles of the rule of law in Ghana.

Dr. Ashigbey warned about the potential spread of illegal mining activities encroaching on large-scale mining concessions, referencing a similar occurrence on January 9th.

Albeit, the recurrence of such incidents across regions in Ghana has posed a significant threat to both the environment and the country’s economic stability, which necessitates immediate and decisive action from the government and other regulatory bodies.

Government’s Role and Corporate Responsibility

Meanwhile, the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, in its recent statement, called on the government to reinforce its commitment. Dr. Ashigbey pointed out;

 “We are deeply concerned about the pace of the action. We have formally written to His Excellency the President urging for an immediate cease and desist order to all illegal miners and regulatory bodies. This decisive measure is crucial to demonstrate the government’s commitment to combating this menace and protecting our environment.”

Moreover, he underscored the importance of large-scale miners fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities to ensure sustainable mining practices that benefit local communities and attract both local and foreign investments. He added;

 “We need to let people know that we’re still within a country of rule of law. And it’s still important that the cease-and-desist order is given.”

He insisted that enforcing the law without prejudice is vital to deterring illegal mining activities and preventing future clashes.

Highlighting the environmental consequences of illegal mining, Dr. Ashigbey lamented;

 “We know that in the recent days, some water treatment plants have been closed. And so the challenge is still there. Its important that we don’t create a vacuum that allows people to still perpetuate this illegality and irresponsibility.”

The coalition’s concern is that if left unchecked, illegal mining will continue to devastate the environment, causing long-term damage that affects the entire nation. In light of the Obuasi incident, the coalition urged the government to act swiftly.

 The Media Coalition Against Galamsey’s stance reflects a broader call for responsible governance and the need for a concerted effort to combat illegal mining in Ghana, ensuring that the country’s natural resources are preserved for future generations while upholding justice and the rule of law.
