Gas Pipeline Maintenance

Gas Pipeline Maintenance

The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have officially informed the public about the commencement of major maintenance work on the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), operated by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo).

The maintenance activities, which began on February 5 and are expected to last until March 2, 2025, will impact the supply of natural gas to thermal power plants in Tema and could lead to potential power supply challenges.

“According to a statement issued by WAPCO, gas supply to thermal plants in Tema from Nigeria as well as gas transportation via reverse flow from Takoradi to Tema will be curtailed.

“[This is] to allow for cleaning of the pipeline (i.e. Pigging) and the replacement of some subsea equipment.”

This disruption in gas supply will directly affect the operation of thermal power plants in Tema, as these plants rely heavily on natural gas to generate electricity.

With no available gas supply, the affected plants will be forced to shut down temporarily, raising concerns about electricity supply stability across the country.

In response to the situation, Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with key energy stakeholders, has proactively taken steps to minimize the impact on the country’s electricity supply.

A significant volume of liquid fuel has been procured to serve as an alternative energy source for some of the power-generating plants in Tema that have the capability to operate on dual-fuel systems.

This measure is expected to ensure the continued operation of these plants, thereby reducing the potential for widespread power outages.

GRIDCo and ECG have also assured Ghanaians that they are closely monitoring the situation and implementing contingency measures to maintain grid stability.

“Engineers and technical teams are on standby to address any unforeseen technical challenges that may arise during the maintenance period.”

In their joint statement, GRIDCo and ECG have assured the public that they are working tirelessly to mitigate any major disruptions.

The two organizations also emphasized the need for cooperation from all stakeholders, including businesses and residential consumers, to manage power demand effectively during the maintenance period.

“We thank all stakeholders in the energy sector and the public for your cooperation.

“The maintenance work is crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability and efficiency of gas supply to Ghana’s energy sector.”

Despite the efforts to mitigate the impact of the maintenance work, there is still concern among the public and industry stakeholders regarding the possibility of power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”

The shutdown of some thermal plants in Tema may place additional strain on hydroelectric power sources, which are already operating at limited capacity due to seasonal variations in water levels at major dams.

Businesses and industries that depend heavily on a stable electricity supply have expressed their concerns about potential disruptions and are urging the government to provide regular updates on power supply management during the maintenance period.

As WAPCo undertakes its scheduled pipeline maintenance, Ghana’s energy sector is bracing for possible power supply fluctuations.

However, the government’s proactive measures, including the procurement of alternative fuel supplies and close monitoring by GRIDCo and ECG, are expected to cushion the impact.

With stakeholders working together to manage the situation, it remains to be seen how effectively Ghana will navigate this temporary challenge in its energy supply system.

Consumers are advised to stay updated with official communications from the power distribution companies regarding any potential changes in electricity supply schedules.
