NPP Warns Against Scrapping Trainee Allowances

Training Colleges; Teacher Trainee Allowances

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong warning to the government, urging it not to cancel the nursing and teacher trainee allowances.

The party’s National Youth Wing, in a statement signed by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, accused the administration of President John Mahama of deceiving students and failing to uphold campaign promises.

According to the statement, the government is already showing signs of what the party describes as a “scam” just one month into office.

The NPP asserted that it was well aware that Mahama would renege on his campaign promises but is shocked at how swiftly he has begun to do so.

“We are gobsmacked to notice the intention to cancel teacher and nursing training allowances in flagrant contrast to their promise to rather be prompt on payments during the 2024 elections campaign.

“This amounts to deception and smacks of scam as these students fell for the promises of the NDC and voted massively for same”.

New Patriotic Party (NPP)

In light of this, the party firmly demanded that the government reinstate and uphold the trainee allowances, emphasizing that this was not merely a campaign promise but a crucial financial support system that significantly benefits students.

The NPP argued that these stipends play an essential role in easing the financial burdens of teacher and nursing trainees, many of whom rely on them to sustain their education and livelihoods.

Additionally, the party dismissed the government’s justification that it aimed to strengthen the student loan scheme as an alternative for all tertiary institutions.

It contended that this argument was flawed, as teacher and nursing training colleges have not been elevated to university status.

According to the NPP, applying the same financial framework to these institutions ignores their unique structure and the critical role they play in producing essential professionals for the country.

The party insisted that any policy shift should consider these distinctions rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all approach that disadvantages trainees.

Demand for Accountability and Apology Over Trainee Allowances

Furthermore, the NPP criticized the government, accusing it of adding another layer of deception to the issue.

The statement emphasized that while students are already struggling with the looming withdrawal of their allowances, the administration has allegedly deployed Kevin Taylor, a social commentator linked to the ruling party, to launch attacks on the affected students.

According to the NPP, instead of addressing the students’ concerns, the government has resorted to using Taylor’s platforms, Loud Silence Media and With All Due Respect, to insult and discredit them, exacerbating their frustration.

“He [Kevin Taylor] has descended on the trainees heavily, describing them as prostitutes, fools, and other condescending remarks that we cannot reproduce here.”

Accordingly, the NPP vehemently condemned these remarks and insisted on a formal apology from President Mahama and his administration.

The party also urged the government to take immediate steps to rein in Kevin Taylor, whom they accused of using his platform to intimidate and antagonize Ghanaians through his commentary.

Beyond criticizing the government, the statement served as a rallying call to students in teacher and nursing training institutions, urging them to stand up and defend their dignity.

The NPP encouraged these students to resist what it described as a politically motivated scheme designed to undermine their welfare and future.

The party maintained that the alleged deception was part of a broader agenda to disadvantage them.

As such, the NPP urged students to remain vigilant and assert their rights in the face of such policies. “The National Youth Wing of the NPP will stand with you and fight with you for the restoration of your dignity.”

The party also extended its appeal to the youth and students affected by the government’s decision to eliminate trainee allowances, urging them to take a firm stand against what it described as a blatant act of political deceit.

In a strong call to action, the NPP rallied students to reject what it sees as an orchestrated attempt to manipulate and disadvantage them.

The statement charged them to resist with determination, declaring: Say no to political scams! Say no to political bullying! Say no to the politics of deception!

The party emphasized that students should not allow themselves to be used as pawns in what it perceives as a calculated strategy to suppress their interests while misleading the broader public.

Instead, they were encouraged to demand accountability and fairness in policies that directly impact their education and future.
