Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister of Defence, has praised the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their steadfast commitment and professionalism in protecting the country’s stability and sovereignty.

In a thoughtful and patriotic statement made public, Dr. Boamah commended the GAF for their unwavering service “by land, sea, and air, even at the peril of their lives,” highlighting that their bravery is evidence that democracy is still the best means of advancing a country.

Dr. Boamah’s comments coincide with a national conversation that is heavily centered on the need to uphold democratic principles, guarantee economic recovery, and crack down on illicit mining operations that endanger the sustainability of the nation’s environment.

The Defense Minister was unreserved in his warning against the return of illicit mining, also known as galamsey, particularly in forest reserves and vital waterways.

His admonition, “A word to the wise is enough!” reaffirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural heritage and conserving water supplies for coming generations.

Dr. Boamah encouraged Ghanaians to imitate the military’s professionalism and mentality, portraying it as the epitome of discipline, patriotism, and duty.

“Let’s cultivate the admirable mindset, patriotism and professionalism of our dedicated men and women in uniform,” he urged. Such a national mindset, in his opinion, is essential to bolstering President Mahama’s initiatives to “reset Ghana and fix the economy for shared prosperity for all.”

Collaboration with Ghana Catholic Bishops

Dr. Boamah also revealed a noteworthy collaboration between the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Ministry of Defense, which aims to improve peacebuilding frameworks in Ghana and the larger West African subregion.

Fr. Michael Quaicoe, Director of Governance, Justice, and Peace at the Conference, and his delegation attended the meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Defence at The Square.

The Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI), a regional peace initiative aimed at strengthening security, fostering social cohesion, and reducing violent extremism throughout the Sahel belt, was the main topic of discussion.

The meeting, according to Dr. Boamah, was “fruitful and progressive,” emphasizing the strategic value of institutional and interfaith cooperation in maintaining peace and national security.

According to Fr. Quaicoe and his team, the initiative seeks to use the Catholic Church’s structural and moral influence to build long-lasting frameworks for peace, particularly in border regions that are susceptible to instability and insurgency.

In addition to reaffirming the Catholic Church’s longstanding dedication to peace and nation-building, Fr. Quaicoe assured the Defense Ministry that they are prepared to play a more active role in Ghana’s internal and external security framework.

He asserted that the SPI is a well-planned approach that entails involving youth, faith-based organisations, traditional leaders, and security institutions in order to jointly establish enduring peace throughout the region, rather than just being a spiritual or doctrinal intervention.

Cooperative Overture

Given the growing risks of terrorism, political instability, and insecurity throughout the Sahel, including nations that border Ghana directly or indirectly, this cooperative overture is appropriate.

Such collaborations are essential to strengthening community-based conflict prevention strategies and fostering resilience for Ghana, which has maintained relative stability in the face of regional unrest.

The Ministry’s willingness to collaborate with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference is indicative of a growing understanding that modern security entails more than just the use of force; it also entails community involvement, interreligious communication, diplomacy, and strong governance structures.

The Ministry is taking the lead in comprehensive peacebuilding initiatives that use faith-based institutions to promote long-term security and reconciliation by supporting the Catholic Church’s peace initiative.
