The Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted an armed robbery attempt along the Kumasi-Bibiani highway, a key transport route in the Ashanti Region.
According to an official statement released by the police, the incident occurred on the evening of Monday, June 2, 2025, and involved a dramatic shootout between law enforcement officers and a gang of five armed suspects.
“Five armed suspects, one of whom was wielding a pump-action gun, had stopped the two vehicles at gunpoint and were in the process of robbing passengers. The timely arrival of the patrol team disrupted the attack.”

The statement explained that as soon as the armed suspects became aware of the approaching police patrol team, the individual carrying the pump-action shotgun immediately launched an attack, firing directly at the officers.
The patrol team, acting swiftly and decisively, returned fire in self-defense. During the intense exchange, one of the suspects sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead by medical personnel at the Afari Government Hospital.
Meanwhile, the remaining four suspects fled the scene, disappearing into nearby bushes under the cover of darkness.

The police believe these individuals may have been wounded in the shootout and are actively working to locate them.
The deceased suspect’s body has since been deposited at the morgue of the Afari Government Hospital for preservation and further forensic investigation.
Accordingly, Law enforcement officials are urging heightened vigilance among the general public, particularly within the medical community.
Health workers and facilities have been asked to remain alert and promptly notify the nearest police station if they encounter anyone seeking treatment for suspicious or unexplained gunshot wounds.
Authorities believe that some of the suspects who fled the robbery scene may be injured and are counting on public cooperation to aid in their apprehension.
Police Efforts In Armed Robbery Case Applauded
Following the successful prevention of the armed robbery, the Ashanti Regional Police Command extended formal recognition to the officers who intervened.
The command praised the patrol team for their swift and courageous response, noting that their decisive action helped prevent a potentially deadly situation from escalating further.

The police also reiterated their ongoing commitment to maintaining peace and order across the country and encouraged members of the public to collaborate with them by reporting suspicious activity.
This latest incident adds to a series of confrontations between police forces and criminal gangs along major Ghanaian highways, where the combination of poorly lit roads and remote locations often provides fertile ground for such attacks.
Experts have called for increased public vigilance, improved street lighting, and the integration of surveillance technologies such as highway cameras to aid in the early detection and deterrence of such crimes.
The Ghana Police Service emphasized that the safety and security of commuters is a shared responsibility.

Authorities encouraged residents in communities along the Kumasi-Bibiani corridor to remain alert and assist in identifying suspicious individuals or activities that could lead to arrests.
“Members of the public are encouraged to continue supporting the Police by providing timely and relevant information to help maintain law and order.”

With one suspect dead and four still alive and on the run, police patrols in the region have reportedly been intensified. Meanwhile, travelers have been advised to remain cautious, particularly when journeying at night.
As investigations continue, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that every effort is being made to track down the remaining suspects and bring them to justice.
This operation, though dangerous, reflects the kind of rapid and decisive response that authorities say is needed to disrupt criminal activity and restore public confidence in highway travel.
