ECOWAS, EU Launch €105m West Africa Projects

The projects are aimed at fortifying peace and security, advancing institutional reform, and strengthening regional trade across West Africa.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in a landmark move with the European Union (EU) and the governments of Germany and Spain, has unveiled four transformative initiatives totalling over €105 million.

These projects are aimed at fortifying peace and security, advancing institutional reform, and strengthening regional trade across West Africa.

The official launch took place at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. The high-level ceremony was attended by dignitaries from ECOWAS, the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, and the embassies of Germany and Spain.

The newly launched projects, financed by the EU with support from Germany and Spain, are designed to elevate ECOWAS’s capabilities in key strategic areas.

Implemented in collaboration with major international agencies, the first project focuses on building stronger democratic institutions and effective conflict prevention mechanisms to promote inclusive governance and regional peacebuilding.

Another initiative targets increased operational efficiency and long-term sustainability of ECOWAS bodies and partnerships. A third programme aims to unlock regional trade potential by improving competitiveness and market access within and beyond West Africa.

The fourth project supports the export of services under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with an emphasis on regional integration in the services sector.

ECOWAS Lauds Long-Term Support For Lasting Impact

During the event, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, applauded the EU, Germany, and Spain for their enduring commitment to the region’s development. He noted that the collaborative efforts demonstrate a shared vision for a stable, prosperous, and well-governed West Africa.

“These initiatives will not only strengthen our institutions and economies but will also deepen the ties of cooperation and solidarity among our peoples. Together, we can address the pressing challenges facing our region—from terrorism and insecurity to climate change and migration—with resilience and unity.”

Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission

Representatives from partner nations echoed these sentiments. Mr. Gautier Mignot, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, underlined the strategic nature of these investments in ensuring sustainable peace and development. He was joined by Dr. Annett Günther from the German Embassy and Mrs. Maria Higon Velasco (tbc) from the Spanish Embassy, who both reaffirmed their countries’ dedication to advancing ECOWAS’s mission.

The programmes are anchored in principles of good governance, human rights, environmental sustainability, and digital innovation. The delegates emphasized that these investments go beyond institutional support—they are also about changing lives.

They are intended to enhance regional stability, economic growth, and social inclusion by creating decent jobs, improving migration governance, and driving gender equality and climate resilience. Through these efforts, ECOWAS and its partners are signalling their resolve to build a unified West Africa where peace, prosperity, and opportunity are accessible to all.
