In a significant show of support, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and the NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, has received a substantial endorsement from a formidable bloc of Members of Parliament (MPs).
This support, which includes a reported 60 NPP MPs, marks a pivotal moment in the internal contest for the party’s flagbearership, signalling a strong early advantage for Dr. Bawumia.
Reports and circulating online videos confirm the backing of numerous prominent NPP MPs who have openly declared their support for Dr. Bawumia.
Among those visibly throwing their weight behind the former Vice President are Dr. Tia Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Walewale; Sammy Awuku, the MP for Akuapem North; Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the MP for Assin South and several others.
Speaking after the courtesy visit from the MPs, Dr. Bawumia expressed immense satisfaction and gratitude for the show of solidarity.
“This morning, I had a visit from our members of parliament. I think that it was a very happy visit. It was a courtesy call, and it’s a call to declare support for me, and I am so happy in terms of the group that has declared support for me from parliament. which now amounts to not less than 60 members of parliament.”

This figure, he noted, represents a considerable portion of the NPP’s parliamentary strength, given that the party currently holds 88 seats in Parliament.

“And so that tells you that a very significant number of members of parliament has declared their support for me,” he emphasized, underscoring the broad base of support he enjoys within the legislative arm of the party.
Dr. Bawumia wasted no time in extending his heartfelt appreciation to all the endorsing MPs. He specifically acknowledged the pivotal role played by Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the Member of Parliament for Mampong, who coordinated this impressive show of force.
Significance of the Support
The former Vice President highlighted the strategic importance of this parliamentary endorsement. “I believe that this is going to be very, very important because the members of parliament, as you know, control the constituencies to a large extent,” he noted.
According to him, the recognition of the MPs’ influence at the grassroots level suggests that their support is expected to translate into significant backing from the party’s constituency delegates, who ultimately determine the flagbearer.
“I’m very, very happy for exactly what they have done today. It’s a strong show of support. I thank them, and I thank God for this strong show of support.”

Dr. Bawumia’s words conveyed both personal appreciation and a strategic understanding of the political implications of such a strong endorsement.

Despite this significant boost, Dr. Bawumia maintained a grounded perspective, acknowledging the considerable effort still required.
“There’s a lot of hard work to be done, so that we can help the party and help the country,” he stated, indicating that the journey to the 2026 primaries and ultimately the national elections is far from over.
His remarks concluded with a renewed commitment to the party and the nation’s welfare, aligning his personal ambitions with broader collective goals.
The declared support for Dr. Bawumia comes as several other prominent figures within the NPP have also signalled their interest in contesting the party’s primaries.
Among these influential personalities are Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the former Education Minister and current MP for Bosomtwe; Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, a former Energy Minister; Hon. Bryan Acheampong, the former Agric Minister and MP for Abetifi; and the former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

The presence of such heavyweights in the race promises a vibrant and competitive internal election, showcasing the depth of ambition within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
For Dr Bawumia, the early consolidation of parliamentary support provides him with a strong launchpad, with the backing of a significant number of MPs likely to translate into critical organisational and financial advantages at the constituency level, vital for mobilising delegates ahead of the primaries.
