Former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially entered the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 presidential elections, picking his nomination forms at the party’s headquarters in Accra.

Flanked by party executives, supporters from across the country, and members of his campaign team, Dr. Adutwum expressed deep gratitude to all who had joined him for what he described as a significant milestone in a journey that began “many years ago.”

“To Chairman Bio, my campaign chairman, who also led and made sure that everything was done well. I’m very grateful. All those who came from far and near, Greater Accra, everywhere. I’m so grateful for coming and also for making sure this event has become successful.”

Dr. Adutwum’s message was one of optimism and transformation. He declared that his bid for the NPP flagbearership was rooted in a belief that Ghana was ready for a new era — one where poverty and deprivation would give way to prosperity and opportunity for all.

“The journey that began many years ago has now gone to a place where we are on track. By the grace of God, my party, I believe, will vote for me and make me the flagbearer.

“The land that our nation has been yearning for years, that our nation will become a prosperous one. Our nation will wage war against poverty and wealth, and poverty and deprivation will be over”.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

Framing the 2028 presidential campaign as a pivotal moment in Ghana’s history, the Bosomtwe MP said it was time for the nation to build on the achievements of past leaders, from Ghana’s first president to the incumbent, but also to confront the challenges that had persisted over the decades.

Politics of Hope

He outlined his vision as one based on “politics of hope” and “politics of transformation,” noting that political leadership should be judged not merely by rhetoric, but by its ability to make tangible improvements in people’s lives.

According to him, the future he envisions for Ghana will be better than both the present and the past. Calling for unity within the NPP, Dr. Adutwum urged fellow aspirants to conduct their campaigns with civility and a shared sense of purpose.

“We need to focus on the unity of our party. We need to share our vision with the people of our party. We need to move forward beyond that to share our vision with the people of Ghana”.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

He pledged to wage a non-acrimonious campaign, promising to focus on articulating his ideas rather than engaging in personal attacks.

His approach, he noted, was not just about winning an internal contest but about presenting Ghanaians with a credible, unifying, and forward-looking alternative when the country heads to the polls in 2028.

Dr. Adutwum acknowledged that every president in Ghana’s history had contributed to the nation’s progress in different ways, but insisted that the next chapter must be defined by bold, people-centred transformation.

“My party gave me the opportunity. Provide a bridge for me to cross to the other side. And once we get to the other side of the river, we are going to meet Ghanaians and let Ghanaians know that our future is going to be better than the present and the past”.

Throughout his speech, the former Education Minister repeatedly returned to the themes of gratitude, unity, and service. He thanked the media for their role in sharing his message and paid tribute to his wife for her support throughout his political journey.

“This is about a country that gained independence many years ago. We’ve done our very best, yet we have a lot to do,” he remarked, stressing that his vision went beyond mere political competition to a broader mission of nation-building.

Dr. Adutwum, who has built a political reputation as a reform-minded leader in the education sector, did not outline specific policy proposals during the event. However, his emphasis on transformation suggests that his campaign will focus on structural reforms and inclusive development strategies.

With his nomination now secured, Dr. Adutwum will join other aspirants in a contest that is expected to test the NPP’s internal cohesion as the party prepares for life after the Akufo-Addo administration.

Whether his message of hope and unity will resonate strongly enough with delegates to secure the flagbearership remains to be seen, but his official entry into the race has already signalled that he intends to compete vigorously for the position.

As he concluded his remarks, Dr. Adutwum returned to his central message: “Together, as the New Patriotic Party, we can lead the effort to transform the future of our nation. That is what this campaign will be about. I will continue to express my gratefulness to everyone of you who is here today. Thank you very much.”
