Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Jose Mourinho in the wake of the Super League announcement in North London. This has brought his contract that would have run until the summer of 2023 to a premature conclusion. The decision to part with Mourinho is based on results and not related to the Super League announcement.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has been relieved of his duties ahead of the team’s clash against Man City in the Carabao Cup Final.
Mourinho had been appointed as successor to Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 due to his proven track records. However, he will now depart empty-handed. Mourinho’s tenure at Spurs is his first without a trophy during his managerial career.
“The Club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties.
“Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level, I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.”
Tottenham’s Official Statement
Spurs have also confirmed that the club’s former midfielder Ryan Mason will take charge of training on Monday. Mason and Chris Powell are expected to be in charge of the team for the upcoming fixtures. Spurs, however, will make a further announcement in due course.
Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers are among the leading contenders to succeed Mourinho in the long-term. Currently, decision over the next manager is expected to be at the end of the season.
Mourinho’s moments at Spurs
Mourinho managed Spurs for 86 games, winning 44 games, drawing 19 games, and losing 23 games.
In his first campaign, Mourinho took Tottenham from 14th in the Premier League to finish sixth – securing Europa League qualification. However, they were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage by RB Leipzig.
This season, Mourinho leaves Spurs seventh in the Premier League standings, five points adrift of the top four with six games to play. He, however, suffered the humiliation of being eliminated from the Europa League in the last 16 stage by Dinamo Zagreb. Spurs also showed no fight in the north London Derby defeat by Arsenal. Spurs showed dismal performance against the Gunners side that are scrapping for a top ten finish, let alone European qualification.
Conversely, he has been able to guide Tottenham to the League Cup final this season, as they seek to bring a 13-year wait for tangible success to a close. Meanwhile, he has been denied the chance of delivering a first piece of silverware to the club in 13 years.
Spurs play Southampton on Wednesday in the Premier League, before Sunday’s trip to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.
