Energy Minister Pays ECG a Working Visit, Warns Staff Over Malfeasance

The minister responsible for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, conducted a working visit to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the heartbeat of the country’s energy value chain.

As part of his supervisory role over agencies under his ministry, John Jinapor has over the last few days visited National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Volta River Authority (VRA), Among others.

 “The visit focused on engaging with staff, understanding current challenges, and reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting the company’s reforms”.

As part of the engagement, the Minister commended the management of ECG, led by Ing. Julius Kpekpena, “for the strides made in procurement, maintenance, revenue mobilization, and strategic direction. A major achievement highlighted was the review of 347 legacy contracts, 202 of which have been terminated, resulting in savings of approximately US$300 million for the Ghanaian taxpayer”.

The Minister however, issued a clear and final warning to the staff, stating, he will not shield any staff involved in malfeasance; be it through the unauthorised sale of meters or diversion of revenue. He added that any staff found culpable will be held fully accountable.

“No special treatment and no exceptions,” the minister added.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has over the years, been a vital player in the country’s energy landscape, responsible for the distribution and transmission of electricity to millions of Ghanaians.

Recently, the company has faced several challenges, including operational inefficiencies, revenue leakages, and allegations of corruption.

The most recent, is the reported over 1000 missing containers which generated public outcry thereby, the threatening the company’s integrity.

Under the new leadership of Ing. Julius Kpekpena, ECG has been making significant strides in addressing these challenges and driving much-needed reforms.

The review and termination of legacy contracts, which have resulted in substantial savings for the Ghanaian taxpayer, is an effort in the right direction and a testament to the company’s commitment to reclaiming its known transparent and accountable legacy .

The Minister’s visit to ECG underscores the government’s determination to ensure that the energy sector operates with the highest levels of integrity and efficiency.

The visit to ECG also serves as a platform to reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting the company’s reforms and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability.

The Minister’s pledge of full support to ECG, coupled with his urge for the staff to “stay focused and committed to delivering on their mandate with integrity,” symbolizes the government’s faith in the company’s ability to transform and become a more efficient and reliable service provider.

This assurance of support, combined with the clear expectations of accountability, will empower ECG to deliver on its mandate and contribute to the overall strengthening of Ghana’s energy sector.

As the Minister made it clear, the government is not only rectifying the wrongs, but also making bold corrections to ensure long-term stability within the energy sector.

This commitment to transforming the energy sector if live up to, will undoubtedly pay dividends in the years to come, benefiting the Ghanaian people and strengthening the nation’s energy security.
