Best Assurance Company Limited, one of Ghana’s indigenous general insurance firms, has announced the appointment of Mr. Robert Wugah as its new Managing Director, effective November 3, 2025.
The appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the company and signals a renewed strategic focus on growth, innovation, and long term value creation within Ghana’s competitive insurance market.
The Board of Directors described the appointment as a carefully considered decision aimed at strengthening the company’s operational efficiency and market relevance. With increasing competition in the non life insurance space and growing customer expectations, Best Assurance’s leadership believes the timing is right for a bold and experienced hand to steer the next phase of the company’s development.
Commenting on the appointment, Chairman of the Board, Dr. Tony Aubynn, expressed strong confidence in Mr. Wugah’s leadership credentials and industry expertise. He described the new Managing Director as a proven leader with a deep understanding of insurance service delivery and a clear appreciation of the evolving dynamics of the sector.
According to Dr. Aubynn, Mr. Wugah’s strengths in collaboration, product flexibility, and the strategic use of technology position him well to enhance value for all stakeholders. The Board believes his appointment will play a critical role in driving profitability while ensuring sustainable growth in line with Best Assurance’s corporate objectives.
Over Two Decades of Industry Experience
Mr. Wugah brings to his new role more than twenty years of extensive experience in the insurance industry. His career spans key areas such as strategy development, underwriting, reinsurance, claims management, innovation, and general management. This broad exposure has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and commercial aspects of insurance operations.
His experience is particularly relevant at a time when insurance companies are under pressure to balance risk management with product innovation and customer centric service delivery. Best Assurance is expected to leverage this wealth of experience to refine its offerings across retail and corporate segments.
Prior to joining Best Assurance, Mr. Wugah served as Managing Director of Imperial General Assurance. During his tenure, he led a successful turnaround that significantly improved the company’s growth trajectory, profitability, and market share after assuming office in 2020. Earlier in his career, Mr. Wugah held senior leadership roles at Wapic Insurance Ghana Limited, now Coronation Insurance Ghana, and Metropolitan Insurance Company, now Hollard Insurance Ghana. His roles included Head of Technical Operations, Head of Corporate and Broker Relations, and Head of Reinsurance. These positions further sharpened his expertise in broker engagement, risk placement, and corporate insurance solutions.

Repositioning Best Assurance for Market Relevance
In his new role, Mr. Wugah is expected to lead efforts to reposition and strengthen Best Assurance’s market presence. The company plans to leverage its existing brand equity to deliver customer focused and market driven insurance solutions across its portfolio.
Best Assurance is licensed by the National Insurance Commission to operate non life insurance businesses including Motor, Fire, Accident, Engineering, Oil and Gas, Marine, and Bond insurance. Industry observers expect a renewed emphasis on product innovation, operational efficiency, and improved claims service under the new leadership.
Expressing his appreciation for the appointment, Mr. Wugah described the role as an honour and reaffirmed his commitment to continuous improvement and value creation through insurance services. He emphasized that collaboration among key stakeholders will be central to achieving the company’s strategic objectives.
He highlighted the importance of strong partnerships with regulators, the Board, brokers, agents, customers, and staff, noting that collective effort is essential in building trust and making Best Assurance a preferred insurance brand in Ghana. His leadership philosophy aligns with a people centered and stakeholder driven approach to business growth.
Strong Academic and Professional Foundation
Mr. Wugah’s professional journey is supported by a solid academic background. He holds an Executive Masters in Business Administration from the University of Ghana Business School and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Cape Coast. He is a Chartered Insurer and a member of both the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana and the Chartered Insurance Institute in the United Kingdom.
In addition, he has participated in several technical insurance training programs in Ghana, Nigeria, Mauritius, and South Africa.
