Bayern Munich produced a magnificent comeback to beat a spirited Real Madrid 4-3 in the second leg of their quarter-final tie at the Allianz Arena, sealing progression into the last four of the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern had to dig very deep to secure a 6-4 aggregate win despite trailing for large parts of the game in what turned out to be one of the most dramatic ties of the competition.

Just in the opening minute, Arda Güler capitalized on a howler from Bayern shot stopper Manuel Neuer to open the scoring after only thirty-six seconds.
Aleksandar Pavlović drew the Bavarians level just five minutes later, heading home from close range following a Joshua Kimmich corner delivery.

Madrid were more cautious as Bayern dominated possession and dictated play, but struggled to convert that control into clear chances.

Arder Güler stepped up again, curling a free kick from just outside the box that had Neuer scrambling to restore Madrid’s lead. However, that advantage lasted only nine minutes as Harry Kane found himself free in the Madrid box to convert a pass from Dayot Upamecano, leveling the game for the second time and marking his fiftieth goal of the season in all competitions.

The first half still had more drama to offer. Kylian Mbappé was neatly played through by Vinícius Júnior and made no mistake, scoring his fifteenth Champions League goal of the campaign to give Los Blancos the lead for the third time and draw them level on aggregate.

Cagey Second Half but Bayern’s Moment

The second half was cagey, with the visitors treading cautiously to stay in the tie. Bayern, on the other hand, pushed relentlessly for an equalizer that would also swing the aggregate advantage in their favour.

The defining moment arrived with four minutes remaining when Eduardo Camavinga, already on a yellow card, was shown a second and sent off for delaying a restart after initially committing a foul.

The six-time European champions made their numerical advantage count. Luis Díaz struck with two minutes left to draw Bayern level for the third time and push them ahead on aggregate.

In added time, Michael Olise sealed a dramatic comeback victory with the last kick of the game, curling an effort beyond Andriy Lunin to secure a 4-3 win on the night.

Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa was not pleased with the sending off of Camavinga.

“It’s incredible. No one can explain how you can send a player off for an episode of that kind. When you lose a game like this, no one can be happy. It’s unfair what happened.”

Defender Antonio Rüdiger also had his reservations about the red card. “ It’s better I don’t speak about the referee. Did you see the red card?”.

Bayern Finally Break Madrid Hoodoo

The elimination of Madrid comes as a significant relief for Bayern, who have struggled against the Spanish giants in knockout encounters since 2012.

The Bavarians had not enjoyed success against Madrid since eliminating them in the semi-finals of the 2011/12 season, a campaign that ultimately ended in heartbreak as they lost the final to Chelsea FC.

Since then, Bayern have been eliminated by Madrid four times, including last season when they were minutes away from progressing before collapsing late at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Their reward this time is a semi-final clash against reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain, with the first leg in France before the return fixture in Munich.

Arsenal Hold Sporting to Reach Semis

Elsewhere, Arsenal FC endured a frustrating night but did enough to secure passage into the semi-finals following a goalless draw with Sporting CP in London.

The 1-0 advantage from the first leg proved decisive as the Gunners advanced with a narrow aggregate victory, reaching the semi-finals for the second consecutive season and the first in their history, reaching this stage back to back.

Arsenal will now face Atlético Madrid, who eliminated Barcelona, as they aim to reach their first Champions League final since 2006, when they fell short against FC Barcelona.

The stage is now set for a blockbuster semi-final lineup, with Europe’s elite clubs edging closer to continental glory.
