The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has inspected a major Chorkor beach cleanup exercise, reaffirming the city’s commitment to improving environmental sanitation and restoring its coastline. The inspection, which took place on Tuesday at Chorkor, forms part of ongoing efforts to address waste accumulation along the coast and promote public health.

The Chorkor beach cleanup initiative is being undertaken by Mayekoo in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). The project aims to remove accumulated waste, improve sanitary conditions, and contribute to long-term strategies to reclaim and maintain the coastline.

Speaking during the inspection, the Mayor noted that the Chorkor beach cleanup aligns with his administration’s focus on practical sanitation measures and environmental restoration. He stressed that beyond immediate cleanliness, the initiative fits into a broader vision to unlock the economic potential of Accra’s coastal areas.

Sanitation and Economic Vision for the Coastline

Hon. Allotey explained that restoring beaches such as Chorkor is not only a public health priority but also a strategic move toward economic development. According to him, cleaner and better-managed beaches could attract tourism-related investments, including hotel developments and recreational facilities.

“Cleaner beaches can transform this coastline into an economic hub,” he stated, adding that such developments could create employment opportunities, particularly for young people in surrounding communities. He emphasised that the Assembly remains committed to supporting initiatives that combine sanitation with economic growth.

The Mayor further indicated that despite the many competing responsibilities of his office, beach sanitation remains a top priority. He assured stakeholders that the AMA would continue to provide the necessary institutional backing to ensure that the Chorkor beach cleanup and similar projects achieve lasting results.

Collaboration Driving Cleanup Efforts

The initiative reflects a growing trend of partnerships between local authorities and private or civic organisations to tackle environmental challenges. The Mayor commended Mayekoo for its proactive role and assured the team of the Assembly’s readiness to support their intervention.

“We are ready to work with partners who are serious about sanitation and environmental protection,” he said, noting that such collaborations are essential for sustainable urban management.

Assemblyman for the Chorkor Electoral Area and Chairman for the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro, Hon. Theophilus Isaac Quaye, also highlighted infrastructure concerns affecting the area. He stressed the need for a proper access route from the roadside to the beach, explaining that improved access would facilitate both cleanup activities and long-term maintenance.

His remarks point to the broader structural challenges that often accompany sanitation efforts, where infrastructure gaps can limit the effectiveness of interventions if not addressed alongside cleanup exercises.

Expansion Plans and Community Participation

Mr. Robert Mills Lamptey, Programmes Lead for Mayekoo, disclosed that the organisation’s involvement in Chorkor followed an initial assessment of the beach’s condition. He explained that the current intervention includes a large-scale mechanical cleanup to remove heavy waste deposits.

This phase will be followed by a volunteer-driven exercise scheduled for Saturday, April 25, which is expected to draw participation from several corporate institutions. Among those supporting the initiative are Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, Clifton Homes, and Gripe.

According to Mr. Lamptey, the involvement of corporate organisations highlights the importance of shared responsibility in tackling environmental issues.

“This is not just about cleaning a beach; it is about building a culture of environmental responsibility,” he noted.

Beyond the immediate exercise, Mayekoo has announced plans to adopt the Chorkor beach for a one-year period. During this time, the organisation will return at least twice every month to carry out maintenance activities using its specialised equipment, including a tractor and plough.

This long-term approach is expected to prevent the re-accumulation of waste and ensure that the gains from the cleanup are sustained over time.

Sustaining Impact Through Long-Term Commitment

The Chorkor beach cleanup represents more than a one-off sanitation exercise; it signals a shift toward structured and sustained environmental management. With continued collaboration between the AMA, private organisations, and community stakeholders, the initiative has the potential to serve as a model for similar efforts across Accra.

The Mayor’s pledge of support reinforces the city’s broader commitment to improving sanitation standards while exploring the economic opportunities tied to a cleaner coastline. As implementation continues, attention will likely focus on maintaining momentum, addressing infrastructure gaps, and ensuring community participation.

Ultimately, the success of the Chorkor beach cleanup will depend on consistent effort and coordinated action. If sustained, the initiative could significantly enhance public health, restore environmental quality, and position Accra’s coastline as a valuable asset for both residents and investors.
