The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five of its personnel after videos circulating widely on social media appeared to show conduct that brings the Service into disrepute.

The move, announced in a press release issued on May 4, 2026, forms part of the Service’s internal disciplinary process as it responds to growing public concern over professionalism within the force. The affected officers include Chief Inspector Matthew Blay, Chief Inspector Francis Arthur, and Inspector Eric Osei, all attached to the Osu Police Station in Accra.

Also implicated are Sergeant Amos Dery of the National Protection Unit (NPU) and Inspector Joseph Okyere Asabre of the Obuasi Police District. According to the statement, all five officers have been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for further investigations.

Authorities say the interdiction is intended to allow for a fair and thorough inquiry into the matter, in line with established disciplinary procedures. While the exact details of the alleged misconduct were not fully outlined in the release, the Service indicated that the officers’ actions, as captured in the viral footage, undermine public confidence and violate expected standards of conduct.

Interdiction and Disciplinary Process

Interdiction, within the Ghana Police Service, is an administrative measure that temporarily relieves officers of their duties while investigations are conducted. It does not amount to dismissal or termination of employment. Officers under interdiction may still receive portions of their salary and remain subject to the outcome of the inquiry.

The Police Service emphasised that this step is necessary to ensure impartial investigations and to preserve the integrity of the disciplinary process. The outcome could range from exoneration to sanctions, depending on the findings of the probe.

This latest action highlights the role of internal oversight mechanisms in maintaining discipline within the Service. The Police Professional Standards Bureau, tasked with handling complaints and misconduct cases, is expected to examine the evidence, interview relevant parties, and make recommendations based on its findings.

Commitment to Professionalism and Public Trust

In its statement, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability. It assured the public that appropriate action would be taken once investigations are concluded.

Maintaining public trust remains central to effective policing. Incidents of alleged misconduct, particularly when amplified by social media, can quickly erode confidence in law enforcement institutions. The Service’s swift response suggests an awareness of the reputational risks involved and the need to demonstrate transparency.

At the same time, the case raises broader questions about ethics, supervision, and the pressures faced by officers in the line of duty. Observers note that while individual accountability is crucial, institutional reforms and continuous training are equally important in preventing such incidents.

Public Reactions and Broader Concerns

Public commentary around the incident has not been one-sided. While many support the disciplinary action, others have pointed to the role of civilians in such situations. One widely shared opinion stated:“You are giving money to a police officer and recording him at the same time. That alone can land him in trouble.”

Another perspective focused on professional responsibility:“As an officer, know your job. Don’t accept any plea from civilians. Let the court system work.” These reactions reflect a broader debate about accountability on both sides.

In Ghanaian law, both the giver and receiver of a bribe may be culpable, yet public discourse often focuses more heavily on the conduct of officers. There are also concerns about the motivations behind such recordings, with some suggesting that individuals deliberately expose officers after engaging in illegal transactions.

At the same time, others argue that exposure is necessary to drive reform:“In this age of social media, be careful doing anything illegal. You may not know who is recording you.”

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Professional Standards

In its statement, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability, assuring the public that appropriate action will be taken once investigations are concluded.

The Service emphasised that maintaining discipline within the ranks remains a priority, particularly at a time when public confidence in law enforcement is closely tied to perceptions of fairness and transparency. The case also adds to ongoing conversations about reforms within the Police Service, including calls for stronger oversight mechanisms and the possible adoption of technology such as body cameras to enhance accountability.

For now, the focus remains on the outcome of the investigation, which is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the responsibility of the officers involved. As the process unfolds, the Police Service faces the dual task of enforcing discipline internally while reassuring the public that standards of conduct will not be compromised.
