Former Head of Public Affairs at Cocobod, Fiifi Boafo, has criticised the conduct of some health professionals following recent discussions about conditions within Ghana’s healthcare sector.
He described circumstances surrounding the Charles Amissah hospital incident as unfortunate and called for firm institutional action to prevent similar occurrences.
He explained that healthcare workers carry enormous responsibility because their duties directly affect human life. He added that professionals entrusted with patient care must protect the safety, dignity and wellbeing of citizens at all times.
Boafo welcomed the government’s decision to investigate the matter involving the death of Charles Amissah. He, however, observed that several previous investigations within the sector failed to produce meaningful reforms or lasting accountability.

He noted that public confidence weakened whenever inquiries ended without visible outcomes. He therefore urged authorities to ensure that every major healthcare controversy produced practical reforms.
“It’s unfortunate. It shouldn’t have happened. Human life was involved and responsibility was expected. We must see action and prevent another occurrence.”

Boafo also acknowledged the structural challenges that continue to place pressure on hospitals and clinics across the country. He maintained that personal accountability remains essential despite the operational difficulties within the health sector.
He further raised concerns about the growing involvement of some medical professionals in online content creation within hospital environments. According to him, such activities raise serious ethical concerns about patient welfare and privacy.
He, however, clarified that educational health content serves an important public interest because it helps citizens understand disease prevention and healthy living. Nonetheless, he criticised the recording of videos inside treatment wards, operating theatres and emergency units where confidentiality remains critical.
Boafo argued that such recordings expose sensitive medical environments and create discomfort among sections of the public. He also warned health workers against discussing patient medical histories on public platforms because of their professional duty to protect confidential information.
Concerns Mount Over Delay In Commissioning Weija Hospital
Boafo raised concern about delays in opening the Weija Hospital despite reports that construction has been completed. He questioned why a fully developed facility remains inactive while healthcare demands continue to increase within surrounding communities.
He maintained that the hospital should already be serving residents across the area. He added that public frustration intensified because the facility remained unused despite claims that the project had been completed.
Boafo explained that procurement concerns contributed to the prolonged delay in operationalising the hospital. He disclosed that disagreements over the pricing of a CT scan machine stalled the final arrangements needed to open the facility.

According to him, international financiers questioned the quoted amount attached to the procurement process. He explained that discussions between the Health Ministry and the World Bank have continued for several months without a final resolution.
The political commentator argued that authorities had enough time to resolve the disagreement. He stressed that prolonged administrative delays continue to deny citizens access to essential healthcare services.
“The hospital is complete. It is ready to serve Ghanaians. Why are we here because of a disagreement over procurement? People urgently need this facility to care for their children.”

Boafo stressed that healthcare infrastructure requires urgent national attention because of its direct impact on public welfare. He argued that leadership within the Health Ministry must provide practical solutions instead of prolonging avoidable delays.

He also criticised what he described as routine government activity despite unresolved challenges within the healthcare sector. He maintained that citizens expect urgency from public office holders supervising critical national projects.
Boafo disclosed that he had seen images of the completed hospital facility. He added that the infrastructure appeared ready for immediate operation and capable of supporting healthcare delivery within the area.
He argued that delays linked to the procurement disagreement have created unnecessary hardship for families seeking medical treatment. He noted that children and vulnerable patients require access to specialised healthcare services within surrounding communities.
Boafo also commended previous investments made into Ghana’s ambulance services. He explained that emergency response improvements continue to play a major role in saving lives during critical situations.
According to him, quality healthcare depends on both functional hospitals and efficient emergency transport systems. He therefore urged authorities to conclude discussions surrounding the procurement concerns and commission the facility for public use.
