Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II, the Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Council and Vice President of the Gonja Traditional Council, has committed his spiritual and traditional support to the Volta River Authority (VRA) to bolster national energy security as the country navigates a critical power period.

This pledge was made during a high-profile courtesy call to the VRA Head Office in Accra, where the traditional leader met with the Authority’s Executive team to discuss the stability of the national grid.

Amidst the ongoing technical and environmental pressures on the Akosombo Hydro Electric Dam, this alliance signifies a strategic bridge between traditional authority and technical management, aimed at ensuring that Ghana’s primary power hub remains resilient against modern challenges.

” The Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II in his remarks thanked the Chief Executive and Management for the warm reception and promised his prayers and support to help the Management of the Volta River Authority provide the needed energy security for the country.”

The visit served a dual purpose: a formal congratulation to the Chief Executive, Edward E. Obeng-Kenzo, and his deputies for their “exemplary leadership exhibited over the past year,” and a reinforcement of the partnership required to protect Ghana’s energy assets.

As the “Akosombo Crisis” compounded by recent operational disruptions and the necessity of managing the Volta Lake’s water levels continues to dominate the national energy discourse, the Buipewura’s presence underscored the importance of grassroots and traditional backing.

The Paramount Chief emphasized that the success of the VRA is inextricably linked to the prosperity of the Gonja Traditional Council and the wider nation, promising “his prayers and support to help the Management of the Volta River Authority provide the needed energy security for the country.”

Traditional Diplomacy and Energy Resilience

The exchange of symbolic gifts between the two leaders highlighted the deep-seated cultural diplomacy that underpins Ghana’s corporate governance.

Chief Executive Edward E. Obeng-Kenzo presented “a token of appreciation” in the form of traditional cola to the Buipewura, a gesture deeply rooted in Northern and Ghanaian customs of respect and welcome.

In a reciprocal act of hospitality, the Buipewura presented the VRA Chief Executive with a “resplendent fugu,” a traditional hand-woven smock that symbolizes authority, protection, and the “expression of cordial relations” between the traditional council and the power utility provider.

Safeguarding the Volta Lake Basin

The assurance from the Buipe Traditional Council is not merely symbolic; it provides a vital socio-political shield for the VRA’s operations along the Volta Lake.

In his address, Obeng-Kenzo highlighted that a core component of energy security is the “preservation of the Volta Lake,” which requires the cooperation of riparian communities and traditional leaders to prevent encroachment and environmental degradation.

The Buipewura’s pledge of support acts as a mandate for local communities to align with the VRA’s “mission to add value to lives” through sustainable environmental practices.

This traditional oversight is critical for maintaining the hydrological health of the lake, ensuring that the Akosombo Dam can continue to serve as the “primary source of power” without interference from illegal activities or land disputes.

Ensuring National Stability through Collaboration

This high-level engagement suggests that the VRA is moving toward a more inclusive “stakeholder-first” model to navigate the current power volatility.

By securing the blessing of the Vice President of the Gonja Traditional Council, the VRA creates a stable social environment for its northern assets and transmission lines.

This collaborative framework ensures that when technical challenges arise, there is a “warm reception” and open channel of communication between the technocrats in Accra and the traditional custodians of the land.

Ultimately, this synergy between modern engineering and traditional leadership serves as a cornerstone for Ghana’s energy security, providing the social license necessary for the VRA to execute long-term strategies for national power reliability.
