Mexico players celebrate making the round of 32 after beating South Korea

Mexico became the first nation to book a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in their second Group A fixture at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

A solitary strike from midfielder Luis Romo just five minutes after halftime proved decisive as El Tri maintained their perfect start to the tournament and strengthened their grip on top spot in the group.

The result gives Mexico six points from two matches and guarantees at least one knockout-stage fixture in front of their passionate home supporters, a significant achievement for one of the tournament’s co-hosts.

Mexico’s qualification was aided by the earlier 1-1 draw between South Africa and Czechia, a result that ensured Javier Aguirre’s side could no longer be overtaken by other teams in the group to deny them a place in the next round.

Korea Dominate But Romo Delivers For El Tri

The contest was closely fought, with South Korea enjoying large spells of possession and looking comfortable in midfield. However, Mexico showed greater efficiency in the final third and capitalised on one of the few clear openings of the match.

Romo’s decisive moment arrived in the 50th minute when he found space inside the penalty area and calmly finished beyond the Korean goalkeeper to send the home crowd into celebration.

South Korea responded positively after going down and pushed for an equaliser, controlling possession for long periods and forcing Mexico to defend. Despite their dominance on the ball, the Asians struggled to create enough clear-cut chances to break down a disciplined Mexican backline.

Mexico remained organised and resilient throughout the second half, protecting their slender advantage until the final whistle and recording a second consecutive victory after their opening triumph over South Africa.

For South Korea, the defeat leaves qualification hopes hanging in the balance ahead of their final group match against Bafana Bafana. Avoiding defeat in that encounter could still be enough to secure progression to the knockout stages.

Aguirre Focused on Bigger Picture

Mexico’s qualification continues an impressive World Cup record under veteran coach Javier Aguirre, who is now leading the national team at a third World Cup after previously taking charge in 2002 and 2010.

Despite becoming the first nation to advance to the knockout rounds, Aguirre was quick to play down the significance of the statistic. “I didn’t know that statistic,” Aguirre told reporters after the match. “It’s anecdotal. It was anecdotal in 2002 and it’s anecdotal now because what matters in the end is the final position.”

The experienced coach instead focused on the opportunity awaiting his team as they prepare for a knockout match on home soil.

The victory guarantees Mexico at least one knockout round fixture in Mexico City, a prospect Aguirre believes could provide a major advantage. “There’s nothing like playing at home, it’s priceless,” he said. “The Mexico factor is hugely important.”

With support levels growing as the tournament progresses, the coach acknowledged the significance of having fans behind his side during the decisive stages of the competition.

Lessons Learned from South Africa Opener

Although Mexico now have maximum points from their opening two matches, Aguirre admitted his side are still evolving and learning from their performances.

The coach referenced Mexico’s opening match against South Africa, where the hosts secured a 2-0 victory but were far from convincing. “Today we learned from our mistakes,” Aguirre said. “We weren’t spectacular, but we played a good match.”

He added that the team’s development was evident in the disciplined manner they approached the encounter against South Korea. “That speaks to the team’s maturity. We were much more patient.”

The comments underline the steady progress Mexico have made since the tournament began. While they may not yet be producing their most entertaining football, they are showing the efficiency and composure often required to succeed in major international competitions.

With qualification secured and top spot in the group firmly within reach, Mexico can now turn their attention to finishing the first round strongly before beginning their pursuit of a deeper World Cup run.

As the first team to reach the Round of 32, El Tri have sent a clear message to the rest of the participating countries that they intend to make full use of home advantage in their quest for global glory.
