Arsenal have completed the permanent signing of Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen after triggering the purchase option contained in his loan agreement.
The Premier League champions confirmed on their official website on Thursday, June 25 that Hincapié’s transfer will become official on July 1, bringing an end to a highly successful loan spell that saw him establish himself as one of the club’s most reliable performers during the 2025/26 campaign. “We are delighted to have activated the option to make Piero Hincapié’s transfer to us permanent from July 1,” Arsenal said in a statement published on Thursday afternoon.
The deal is reported to be worth €40 million and represents a significant investment in a player who played a central role in Arsenal’s title-winning season.
Hincapié featured in 39 matches across all competitions, helping the Gunners maintain one of the strongest defensive records in English football.
Key Figure in Title-Winning Campaign
The 24-year-old quickly adapted to life in North London and became an indispensable member of Mikel Arteta’s squad. His versatility, composure on the ball and defensive intelligence helped Arsenal maintain a backline that has conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League over the past three seasons.

Hincapié made his Arsenal debut in a 2-0 UEFA Champions League victory away to Athletic Club in September 2025 and never looked out of place at the highest level.
His only goal of the season arrived during Arsenal’s draw away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in February. The Ecuadorian’s impressive performances throughout that month earned him the club’s Player of the Month award, an honour he would claim again in April.
The permanent acquisition is viewed as a major boost for Arsenal as they seek to build on their domestic success and challenge for European honours in the coming seasons.
Journey From Ecuador to European Football
Hincapié’s rise to prominence began in his homeland with Independiente del Valle, one of South America’s most respected talent-producing clubs. After progressing through the academy ranks, he celebrated his first major success by helping the club win the U-20 Copa Libertadores in 2020.
Later that year, he moved to Argentine side Talleres, where he made 22 appearances during his debut campaign and attracted interest from clubs across Europe.
His breakthrough on the continent came in August 2021 when he joined Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. Over four seasons in Germany, Hincapié developed into one of the league’s most highly-rated defenders, making 166 appearances in all competitions.
Among the highlights of his time at Leverkusen was the historic 2023/24 season, when the club secured the first Bundesliga title in its history while completing the domestic league campaign unbeaten under manager Xabi Alonso.
Leverkusen also confirmed that the conditions required to activate Arsenal’s purchase option had been fulfilled. “The conditions for the purchase option were met and defender Hincapié will therefore continue his career with the London club in the Premier League in the coming years,” the German club said.
World Cup Focus Remains
While his club future has now been settled, Hincapié’s immediate attention remains on international duty with Ecuador at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.
Having captained Ecuador at Under-17 level, the defender has grown into a key figure for the senior national team and has already amassed 54 international appearances. He has represented his country at four major tournaments, including the ongoing tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and remains one of the leaders of the current squad.

Ecuador face a decisive final Group E encounter against Germany, knowing that only a victory will keep their World Cup hopes alive and secure a place in the knockout stages. Anything other than that will send them packing home.
As the South Americans prepare for one of their biggest matches in recent years, Hincapié will carry the confidence of having secured a permanent move to one of Europe’s elite clubs. Arsenal supporters, meanwhile, will be encouraged that one of the architects of their title-winning campaign has committed his long-term future to the Emirates Stadium.
With his blend of experience, leadership and defensive quality, Hincapié appears set to remain a cornerstone of Arsenal’s ambitions for years to come.
