Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has urged Regional and Sector Commanders of the Ghana Immigration Service to strengthen coordination and professionalism in tackling the country’s evolving migration and security threats, insisting that no security institution can operate effectively when its structures function in isolation from one another.

Speaking at the Ghana Immigration Service Regional Commanders’ Conference held at the GIS Centre of Excellence in Odorkor, the Minister stressed that strong command synergy remains essential for operational success, institutional discipline, accountability and the sustainable growth of the Service, describing the gathering as a timely opportunity for Commanders drawn from across the country to reflect on the demands of modern border management.

Hon. Muntaka noted that the conference’s theme, “Strengthening Command Synergy for Sustainable Growth,” could not be more timely, pointing to the sharp rise in irregular migration, human trafficking, transnational crime, terrorism and cyber enabled threats now confronting the country.

He observed that these overlapping challenges require Regional and Sector Commanders to work in far closer alignment than has traditionally been the case, since threats of this nature rarely respect administrative boundaries or operate within a single jurisdiction.

The Minister added that the conference offered Commanders a valuable platform to compare field experiences and design coordinated responses that reflect the realities of their respective regions, rather than relying on approaches that treat each command as an isolated unit.

Minister Commends Welfare and Infrastructure Push

The Minister commended the Comptroller-General and management of the Ghana Immigration Service for prioritising Staff Welfare, Logistics Enhancement, and Infrastructure Development, describing these efforts as critical to building a motivated and well-equipped workforce capable of meeting the Service’s growing responsibilities.

He noted that officers who feel adequately supported and resourced are better positioned to carry out their duties with the discipline and diligence that border security demands.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to equipping the Ghana Immigration Service with improved operational capabilities and better working conditions, while expressing appreciation to the officers and men of the Service for their unwavering sacrifices in safeguarding Ghana’s borders and contributing to national peace and development.

The Minister said such commitments are not merely symbolic, noting that government continues to work closely with the Service’s leadership to identify specific welfare and logistical gaps that require urgent attention across the country’s various regional and sector commands.

Commanders Charged to Lead with Integrity

Hon. Muntaka charged Commanders to lead with integrity, fairness and discipline, urging them to use the conference platform to share experiences and develop practical solutions for the Service. He stressed that leadership at the regional and sector levels carries significant weight, given that Commanders serve as the primary link between national policy direction and the officers responsible for day to day border enforcement.

The three day conference features presentations on Strategic Leadership, Command and Control, Strategic Management and Finance, Disciplinary Procedures under L.I. 2245, and 360-Degree Leadership, all aimed at strengthening the capacity of Commanders to manage personnel, resources and emerging threats within their jurisdictions.

The Minister’s address set the tone for the conference, reinforcing the message that a unified, disciplined command structure remains central to the Ghana Immigration Service’s ability to protect the country’s borders amid an increasingly complex security environment.

He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the conference would translate into more coordinated action across the country’s regional and sector formations in the months ahead, further strengthening the Service’s overall response to migration and security challenges.
