The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has warned that political power is temporary and urged government appointees to consider the possibility of a change in administration in 2028. He argued that recent developments involving the arrest and detention of members of his party could influence how political actors are treated when power changes hands.

The NPP General Secretary stated that the country’s democratic gains could be weakened if state institutions are used in ways that affect the rights of citizens. According to him, the actions surrounding the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye at the Economic and Organised Crime Office have raised questions about fairness and accountability in governance.

Addressing party supporters and the media, Mr Kodua accused the governing National Democratic Congress of creating a political environment that could set a difficult precedent for future administrations. He claimed that the current situation could affect all political actors if similar practices become accepted within the country’s democratic system.

“The power that we have today is transient. When the table turns, you should be worried because what you accept today can become your reality tomorrow.”

Justin Frimpong Kodua

The politician further alleged that some actions by the government were intended to shift public attention away from discussions about President John Dramani Mahama’s political ambitions. He argued that the Constitution limits presidential leadership to two terms and urged citizens to remain focused on protecting democratic principles.

Mr Kodua referenced historical figures such as Idi Amin while cautioning against any attempt to weaken constitutional limitations. He insisted that Ghana’s democratic journey must be protected through respect for institutions and adherence to established legal frameworks.

Meanwhile, the NPP General Secretary expressed confidence in the party’s ability to reorganise and compete strongly in the next general election. He said the party is prepared to resist what he described as political intimidation and work towards returning to power.

The New Patriotic Party official also rejected claims that the party had been weakened by recent events involving some of its members. He stated that the party had experienced challenges before and possessed the resilience required to rebuild its structures ahead of the 2028 elections.

“Ghana cannot move backwards in democracy. We have men and women who are resilient and will not be coerced.”

Justin Frimpong Kodua

The politician also urged Ghanaians to pay attention to governance practices that could shape the country’s political future. He added that the NPP would continue engaging citizens while preparing for the next electoral contest.

Detail Of Arrest And The Issues Surrounding The Press Statement

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party also criticised the handling of Dennis Miracles Aboagye’s detention at the Economic and Organised Crime Office, demanding clarity on the processes surrounding his arrest. He claimed that the custody of the former government official without interrogation raised issues about access to justice and legal representation.

The NPP General Secretary stated that Mr Aboagye has been in custody since Saturday without undergoing questioning by investigators. He questioned the purpose of keeping an individual in detention for several days without beginning formal procedures.

According to Mr Kodua, persons facing allegations must be given the opportunity to understand the reasons behind their arrest and engage their legal representatives. He argued that transparency in investigations remains important for maintaining confidence in state institutions.

“Before you are arrested, you should be invited. When you are arrested, you should have access to your lawyers, your family and know what crime you have committed.”

The General Secretary also questioned the timing and manner of the arrest, claiming that similar incidents involving individuals travelling outside the country had occurred in previous cases. He referenced cases as examples of individuals whose situations generated public discussion over arrest procedures.

Furthermore, Mr Kodua challenged allegations levelled against Dennis Miracles Aboagye, arguing that accusations must be supported through proper legal channels. He suggested that attempts to influence public opinion before court proceedings could undermine the principle of justice.

The politician urged authorities to pursue criminal matters through the courts if sufficient evidence existed against any individual. He argued that legal processes should replace public accusations and actions that could affect the reputation of suspects before trial.

“Crime is crime. If you have evidence to prosecute a matter, take it to court and allow the law to work.”

Justin Frimpong Kodua

The NPP General Secretary also questioned statements from the Economic and Organised Crime Office regarding the possibility of bail for Mr Aboagye. He asked authorities to provide clear timelines and information about the next steps in the matter.
