President John Dramani Mahama outlined a wide range of infrastructure, healthcare and digital transformation investments underway in the Greater Accra Region during a courtesy visit by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs to the Presidency, Jubilee House, on Monday, July 21, 2026.

The President used the occasion to reaffirm government’s recognition of chieftaincy as a vital governance partner while detailing specific projects reshaping the region since his administration assumed office in 2025.

Addressing the traditional leaders directly, President Mahama described chieftaincy as one of Ghana’s most respected and enduring institutions, crediting traditional authorities with playing an indispensable role across several areas of national life.

“The moral authority and influence of Chiefs remains indispensable to promoting unity, social cohesion, responsible citizenship and national development, which is why government recognises the strong collaboration with traditional authorities as essential to achieving sustainable development,” he said.

Greater Accra’s Strategic Importance to the Nation

President Mahama emphasised the unique position Greater Accra occupies within Ghana’s broader development landscape, describing the region as far more than an administrative unit.

“Greater Accra is not only a region, it is also the seat of government, Ghana’s principal commercial gateway and the host of institutions that serve the entire country. Investments made here must therefore strengthen the capital while supporting national trade, healthcare, employment and economic transformation, and that is why major investments are taking place here in the Greater Accra region” .

The President pointed to the completion and commissioning of Phases 1 and 2 of the Tema Port Terminal 3 expansion project as a major achievement of his administration. He also highlighted the introduction of 24-hour operations at the Tema Port, a move designed to give importers and exporters nationwide continuous access to port services.

Turning to road infrastructure, President Mahama detailed progress under the government’s Big Push initiative, listing several projects currently underway across the region.

These include the Accra-Tema Motorway Expansion, the Tema-Aflao Road, the Adenta-Dodowa Corridor, the Dodowa-Afienya-Dahwenya Road, and the Accra-Kasoa-Winneba-Cape Coast Dualization project.

“We are also scoping phase 2 of the big push, which will include roads such as Ada Junction, Kaseh to Adanfo, and several other regional roads. These are national economic corridors that connect communities and production centres to the capital and also to neighbouring countries and markets across Ghana”.

Healthcare Investments Expand Across the Region

On healthcare, President Mahama pointed to the establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, designed to support treatment for cancers, kidney diseases, cardiovascular conditions, strokes and other illnesses not adequately covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

He also announced that the government had freed up GH¢10 billion for the National Health Insurance Fund. The President confirmed that work has resumed on the La General Hospital to expand healthcare capacity within the capital, alongside the recent commissioning of a new catheterisation lab at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

“We also recently commissioned a new catheterisation lab at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in order to provide specialised cardiothoracic care. Several other improvements are going to take place to expand the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.”

President Mahama highlighted the region’s role in driving Ghana’s digital economy, noting that Greater Accra recorded the highest participation in the 1 Million Coders Programme, which received 91,000 applications nationwide within 48 hours.

He added that the Accra Digital Centre has facilitated almost 600 new jobs in data analytics, telecommunications and related services.

Trade Fair Redevelopment and Airport Expansion Announced

The President also revealed plans for the redevelopment of the International Trade Fair Centre, which will include the construction of a new convention and conference centre on the site.

Additionally, President Mahama announced upcoming developments at the Accra International Airport, describing it as the country’s principal gateway. He confirmed plans for a new car park at Terminal 3, topped with a hotel, aimed at improving the overall travel experience for passengers.

Closing his remarks, President Mahama acknowledged concerns raised by the chiefs regarding the security of traditional authorities, addressing the House of Chiefs directly using the traditional greeting. “Niime and Naame, I recognise your comments on the security of chiefs and traditional authorities,” he said.

Taken together, the President’s remarks reflect a deliberate strategy to position Greater Accra as both a hub for national economic activity and a model for the kind of infrastructure, healthcare and digital investment government intends to replicate across the country.

With chieftaincy institutions playing a central role in local governance and community mobilisation, President Mahama’s engagement with the Regional House of Chiefs signals continued government interest in maintaining close collaboration with traditional authorities as these development projects move forward across the region
