The latest Global InfoAnalytics poll has positioned Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia as the leading contenders to head the governing party into the 2028 general election, while also projecting both men to comfortably defeat former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in separate presidential race simulations.

The nationwide survey found that Dr. Ato Forson and Mr. Asiedu Nketia each secured 31 percent support among respondents asked to choose a potential NDC presidential candidate for the 2028 elections, placing them jointly at the top of the party’s prospective flagbearer race.

The findings suggest that either candidate would begin a future presidential contest with a significant advantage over the New Patriotic Party’s expected leading figure, Dr. Bawumia.

Ato Forson Records Strongest Head-to-Head Margin

In a simulated presidential contest between Dr. Ato Forson and Dr. Bawumia, the Finance Minister emerged with a commanding lead. According to the poll, Dr. Ato Forson would secure 57.5 percent of the vote against Dr. Bawumia’s 35.3 percent, representing a margin of more than 22 percentage points.

The survey also measured support for other possible candidates in the same scenario. Kennedy Agyapong attracted 4.3 percent of respondents, while 1.8 percent preferred another candidate. Nana Kwame Bediako received 0.6 percent, and Alan Kyerematen polled 0.5 percent.

Asiedu Nketia Also Opens Comfortable Lead

A separate simulation replacing Dr. Ato Forson with Johnson Asiedu Nketia produced similar results. The NDC National Chairman was projected to win with 54.2 percent of the vote, while Dr. Bawumia secured 37.1 percent.

Former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong obtained 4.8 percent support in the scenario, followed by 2.1 percent for another candidate. Alan Kyerematen received 1.0 percent, while Nana Kwame Bediako polled 0.8 percent.

The results indicate that both leading NDC figures currently outperform the opposition leader in hypothetical 2028 presidential matchups, although Dr. Ato Forson records the larger projected victory margin.

Global InfoAnalytics conducted the survey between July 15 and July 24, 2026, using computer assisted telephone interviews. The research firm initially targeted 9,242 registered voters, with 7,761 respondents completing the survey, representing an 84 percent response rate.

The sample was drawn from the Electoral Commission’s 2024 voters register using probability random sampling with regional quota limits to ensure representation across all 16 regions of Ghana. According to Global InfoAnalytics, the poll has a 99 percent confidence level and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.

Poll Signals Early Advantage Ahead of 2028

While the 2028 presidential election remains more than two years away, the survey offers one of the clearest early indications of Ghana’s evolving political landscape.

The findings suggest that the National Democratic Congress currently enjoys a measurable advantage over the opposition, with both Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Johnson Asiedu Nketia emerging as formidable contenders capable of outperforming Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in head-to-head contests.

For the ruling National Democratic Congress, the poll may strengthen internal discussions about succession and the qualities party delegates will prioritize when selecting a flagbearer.

For the opposition New Patriotic Party, the results underscore the challenge of rebuilding electoral competitiveness after its 2024 defeat and may intensify debate over the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of 2028.

Although opinion polls are snapshots of public sentiment rather than predictions of election outcomes, the Global InfoAnalytics survey provides an early benchmark against which the fortunes of the major political actors are likely to be measured in the coming months.

With the ruling party’s primaries yet to be held and the political environment certain to evolve, the findings are expected to shape conversations within both the NDC and the NPP as preparations for the next electoral cycle gradually gather momentum.
