A commuter pays their fare inside a trotro, as transport unions confirm that fares remain unchanged across all routes following government's reduction in the diesel regulatory margin.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council announced that transport fares will remain unchanged across all routes until further notice, following the government’s reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel that took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

The two organisations confirmed the decision in a joint press release issued on August 5, 2026. The leadership of both organisations expressed appreciation to the government for reducing the regulatory margin on diesel, describing the intervention as a direct response to concerns raised by transport operators.

“The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union of the Trades Union Congress and the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council wishes to thank the Government of Ghana, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, for the recent reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel by GH¢2.00 per litre, which took effect on Tuesday, 4th August 2026, for a period of one month.”.

According to the statement, the reduction followed direct engagement between union leadership and the sector Minister, where transport operators presented their case for urgent relief amid rising fuel costs. “We are happy that those engagements yielded results,” the statement said.

The unions welcomed the measure while urging government to consider extending the relief period should fuel prices continue climbing beyond the current one-month window.

Fares to Remain Unchanged Across All Routes

Following consultations with national executives and stakeholders, both organisations confirmed that commuters would not face any fare increases as a result of recent fuel price movements.

“Following consultations with our national executives and stakeholders, we wish to inform the general public that transport fares will remain unchanged across all routes until further notice”.

The unions issued a direct call to drivers, station masters and branch executives to comply fully with the existing approved fare structure, warning against any unauthorised charges imposed on commuters.

The organisations also established a clear reporting mechanism for commuters who encounter fare violations, directing them to raise concerns immediately with local union offices. “Any commuter required to pay above the approved fare should report the matter immediately to the nearest union office for prompt redress,” the statement said.

A Coordinated Response From Transport Leadership

The statement was jointly signed by Mr Godfred Abulbire, General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, and Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council, reflecting coordinated agreement between the two organisations representing transport operators across the country.

The press release was distributed to several key government and media stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Minister in charge of Government Communications, the National Petroleum Authority, all press houses and all Regional Coordinating Directors, ensuring the announcement reached both regulatory bodies and the wider public.

What This Means for Commuters

The decision to freeze fares offers immediate relief for commuters across Ghana, who will not face increased transport costs despite ongoing fluctuations in global and domestic fuel prices.

With the diesel margin reduction set to last one month, attention will likely turn to whether the government extends the intervention beyond its current timeframe, particularly if fuel prices continue to rise as the unions have cautioned.

For now, the joint announcement from GPRTU and GRTCC provides clarity for both transport operators and passengers navigating Ghana’s road network, while establishing a clear complaint mechanism to address any attempts by individual drivers or operators to charge above the officially approved fare structure.
