Nigeria’s sustained success at youth level is no accident but the product of a deep talent pool, committed young players and a thriving domestic football system, according to Nigerian broadcaster, football writer and NPFL commentator Adesina Ayooluwa.

Speaking exclusively to The Vault News, Ayooluwa said the Flying Eagles’ qualification for the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship reflects the country’s long-standing strength in age-grade football and its ability to consistently produce talented players capable of competing at the highest level.

The defending champions booked their place in Sunday’s final after edging hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties in the semi-finals, sealing qualification for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana. They will now face Burkina Faso, who defeated Niger to reach the title decider.

The final, scheduled for Sunday, August 9, at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium in Yamoussoukro, presents Nigeria with an opportunity to retain the regional crown while avenging the 2-0 defeat suffered against Burkina Faso in the group stage earlier in the tournament.

For Ayooluwa, the Flying Eagles’ latest run is another example of Nigeria’s ability to remain competitive at youth level despite the increasing strength of football across West Africa.

He believes the country’s best young talents continue to emerge from Nigeria’s domestic clubs and football academies, providing a solid foundation for the national youth teams. He also highlighted the commitment of the younger generation to achieve success.

“They want to be the best and sell themselves to the continent and also to clubs locally in Nigeria and internationally. The commitment level from these young athletes has really helped the team.”

Talent Identification Key to Nigeria’s Success

The Nigerian broadcaster also attributed Nigeria’s consistent performances in youth competitions partly to the country’s large pool of talented footballers, but stressed that identifying and developing the right players is equally important.

Going into the WAFU B tournament, he noted that the Flying Eagles assembled some of the finest youngsters from the Nigeria Premier Football League and leading academies, creating a squad capable of challenging for honours.

He, however, maintained that Nigeria’s scouting network still has room for improvement.

“Largely so,” Ayooluwa said when asked whether Nigeria’s population contributes to its youth success. “The reason why Nigeria enjoys success at age-grade level could be the talent pool.”

Translating Youth Success to the Super Eagles

Despite Nigeria’s impressive record in youth football, Ayooluwa acknowledged that converting those achievements into sustained success with the senior national team remains a challenge.

He argued that greater attention should be paid to integrating outstanding youth players into the Super Eagles through a structured development pathway. “Something has to be done where we take them to the national team. It should be seamless and it should be gradual,” he said.

Ayooluwa also believes stricter age verification through MRI testing has improved the integrity of youth competitions, allowing genuine young talents to flourish and develop naturally.

Final Presents Chance for Redemption

Although both Nigeria and Burkina Faso have already secured qualification for the 2027 U-20 AFCON by reaching the final, Sunday’s encounter carries added significance.

Burkina Faso enters the match with a psychological advantage after beating the Flying Eagles 2-0 in the group stage, but Ayooluwa believes Nigeria has the quality and determination to overturn that result when the championship is at stake.

Victory would see Nigeria’s U-20 national team successfully defend the WAFU B U-20 Championship and further strengthen Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading producers of football talent at youth level.
