Ghana and the Republic of Korea are strengthening cooperation in tourism, culture and the creative arts through a five-year partnership valued at approximately US$4.5 million, marking a significant boost to bilateral collaboration between the two countries.

The partnership is expected to support a range of initiatives aimed at building capacity within Ghana’s heritage and creative sectors, with both countries positioning the agreement as a foundation for deeper cultural exchange in the years ahead. Discussions between officials from both nations centred on how the funding and technical expertise involved could be channelled into practical, long-term improvements for Ghana’s tourism and cultural heritage landscape.

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, expressed appreciation for Korea’s financial and technical support under the partnership, highlighting recent professional training for Ghanaian heritage site managers as a key step towards strengthening local capacity and improving the preservation and presentation of the country’s cultural heritage.

“This training for our heritage site managers is a key step towards strengthening capacity and improving the preservation and presentation of Ghana’s cultural heritage.”

She noted that the training programme reflects the kind of practical, skills-based support the partnership is designed to deliver, equipping Ghanaian professionals with the tools needed to better manage and safeguard heritage sites across the country for future generations.

According to the Minister, this kind of targeted capacity building is essential if Ghana is to fully harness the economic and cultural value embedded in its historical sites.

Call for Deeper Cultural Exchange

Hon. Gomashie also called for deeper cultural exchange between both countries, stressing that Ghana stands to learn a great deal from Korea’s culture, discipline and work ethic, even as it shares its own rich cultural heritage and creative traditions with its Korean partners.

Her remarks pointed to a partnership envisioned as a two-way exchange rather than a one-directional transfer of resources, with both countries expected to benefit from exposure to each other’s cultural practices, creative industries, and approaches to heritage preservation.

She suggested that such mutual learning could ultimately strengthen not just the tourism sector, but broader national attitudes toward productivity, discipline, and cultural pride.

Korean Delegation Expresses Gratitude for Reception

The Korean delegation, led by Jinsung Jeon of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded them in Ghana, thanking the Minister for the cordial welcome extended to the visiting team during their engagement with Ghanaian officials.

The delegation’s visit forms part of the broader diplomatic and cultural exchange activities tied to the five-year partnership, underscoring the level of engagement both governments are investing in to ensure the agreement translates into tangible outcomes for the tourism, culture and creative arts sectors in Ghana.

The visit also provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss how future collaboration under the partnership might be structured, including potential areas for further training and institutional exchange.

Boost for Heritage Preservation and Creative Industries

The US$4.5 million partnership arrives at a time when Ghana continues to explore ways of strengthening its tourism and creative economy, sectors widely regarded as having significant untapped potential for job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

Support of this nature, particularly technical training for heritage site managers, is likely to have a direct impact on how effectively the country preserves and presents its historical and cultural assets to both domestic and international visitors.

For Korea, the partnership offers an opportunity to deepen its cultural diplomacy footprint in West Africa, building on its broader engagement with UNESCO-related heritage and cultural preservation initiatives across the region.

The involvement of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO in the partnership also signals a level of institutional weight behind the collaboration, suggesting the initiative is being approached with a structured, standards-based framework rather than as an informal exchange arrangement.

With the five-year framework now in place, attention turns to how the partnership will be implemented over the coming years, particularly in terms of additional training programmes, exchange initiatives, and potential investment in Ghana’s cultural infrastructure.

Both sides appear committed to ensuring the collaboration extends beyond financial support alone, with an emphasis on genuine cultural exchange that allows both countries to draw lessons from each other’s strengths in the tourism, culture, and creative arts space.

As Ghana continues to position itself as a competitive tourism and creative arts destination, partnerships such as this one with Korea are likely to play an increasingly important role in shaping the country’s capacity to preserve its heritage while expanding opportunities within its creative economy.

The coming months are expected to reveal further details on how the US$4.5 million will be allocated across specific projects, as both governments work to translate the goodwill expressed during this engagement into concrete, measurable outcomes for Ghana’s tourism and cultural sectors.
