Nigel Farage Claims Victory in Clacton but Refuses to Attend Declaration

Nigel Farage has declared victory in the Clacton by-election while refusing to attend the official declaration, claiming he had been warned of an “organised campaign to disrupt and degrade the result” as counting continued following a contest largely boycotted by Britain’s major political parties.

The Reform UK leader informed supporters at an event several miles from the counting venue that he had won the Essex seat “fairly convincingly,” describing the result as an “overwhelming” endorsement of his political agenda and his decision to trigger the by-election.

Nigel Farage had resigned as Clacton’s MP, prompting the contest and sending thousands of voters to the polls in a highly unusual election in which the major parties stayed out of the race. With Labour, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats choosing not to field candidates, Farage faced an unconventional field of challengers, with satirical candidate Count Binface emerging as his most prominent rival.

Speaking at “Farage Fest,” a Reform UK event held in the Essex countryside, Farage disclosed he had been informed by Essex Police about an alleged plan to interfere with the declaration.

“I’m not scared of these people, far from it. But I’m damned if I’m going to stand on a stage, having won a resounding victory, a ringing endorsement of all that I’ve tried to fight for, and you’ve tried to fight for, and be demeaned and humiliated by nobodies, and I will not sadly be attending the count.”

Farage did not attend the count at Clacton Leisure Centre, although election officials stressed that arrangements were in place to ensure the process proceeded safely.

Ian Davidson, Chief Executive of Tendring District Council and the acting returning officer for the election, declined to comment on specific security matters but confirmed that a significant police operation was in place.

“We work very closely with Essex Police and have done so throughout this process, and continue to do so tonight, and we will be continuing the count, as we always do, in a safe and secure manner.”

Ian Davidson

In a later statement, he sought to reassure residents that there was no reason to halt proceedings.

“We have worked closely with Essex Police colleagues to ensure the election process is completed safely and securely, as is evident from the level of security we have in place here today. This includes a robust policing operation throughout the day and including at the count.”

Ian Davidson

He added, “it is a candidate’s decision whether or not to attend the count. However I want to reassure people we have no reason not to proceed with the count process at this time.”

Farage nevertheless declared that,  “the verdict is now in, and it is a convincing, overwhelming win with more votes than we got in the General Election of 2024.”

“In doing so we have beaten the candidate for the ‘uni-party’. Yes there were Liberal Democrats, Labour, Conservative canvassers out canvassing for Count Binface. What an upside-down world it is, where Count Binface is now the candidate of the establishment.”

Nigel Farage

He added, “today the voters in Clacton have stuck up two fingers to the entire political establishment.”

The declaration of victory is particularly significant for Farage because the by-election followed his resignation from Parliament amid scrutiny over a £5 million donation from cryptocurrency businessman Christopher Harborne.

The donation had been the subject of questions over whether it had been properly declared, with Farage facing an investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog.

Although the election itself gives Farage an opportunity to secure a fresh mandate, the standards investigation remains an unresolved issue that could have further consequences for his parliamentary future.

Count Binface Warns of Possible Second Clacton Election

While Farage celebrated his acclaimed decisive victory, his most prominent challenger, Count Binface, suggested that the political drama surrounding Clacton could continue beyond the result currently being counted.

The satirical candidate, whose platform includes pledges such as abolishing VAR in football and nationalising Adele, has become an unlikely central figure in a by-election in which established political parties largely stayed away.

Count Binface has also focused attention on the circumstances surrounding Farage’s resignation and the possibility that the Reform leader could face further parliamentary scrutiny over the £5 million donation.

If the parliamentary standards process eventually finds a serious breach and recommends a suspension of 10 sitting days or more, a recall petition could potentially be triggered in Clacton. If enough voters sign such a petition, another by-election could follow.

That possibility prompted Count Binface to predict that voters could soon find themselves returning to the polls.

“Well, in that case, it’s going to be a two-legged match like the Carabao Cup or the Cold War, because we’re going to be back again in a few weeks, aren’t we? We will see what happens then.”

The possibility of another contest means the Clacton by-election may not represent the final chapter in the political dispute surrounding Farage’s position.
