Cagliari forward Yael Trepy is receiving intensive medical treatment at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari after a serious incident in Sardinia left the young French footballer in critical condition.
The Italian club confirmed Trepy’s hospitalisation on Monday, August 17, saying the 20-year-old is being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
“Cagliari Calcio announces that player Yael Trepy is currently hospitalised at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where he is in intensive care.”

The club did not disclose details about what caused Trepy’s medical emergency or provide an assessment of his current condition. In its statement, Cagliari deliberately focused on supporting the player and his family while asking the public and media to respect their privacy during a difficult period.
Cagliari also said it remains in constant contact with medical personnel and the player’s family while closely monitoring his condition. “The Club is in constant contact with the healthcare facility and the player’s family and is closely monitoring the progress of his condition.”
The development comes only days after Trepy featured for Cagliari in their first competitive match of the 2026-27 campaign. He started their Coppa Italia encounter against Arezzo on Friday and played 54 minutes as the Sardinian side secured a 1-0 victory. The squad had subsequently been given time off before returning to preparations for the new Serie A season.
Reports Point to Swimming Pool Accident
Italian media reports have linked Trepy’s hospitalisation to an incident involving a swimming pool in Porto Cervo, in northern Sardinia. Reports from Italy indicate that the forward was involved in a near-drowning incident while enjoying time away from football.

According to the reports, Trepy was rescued after getting into difficulty in the pool and losing consciousness. Emergency services reportedly attended the scene before he was transported by helicopter to the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari.
However, those details have not been included in Cagliari’s official statement, meaning they should be treated as media reports rather than confirmed information from the club.
Italian outlet L’Unione Sarda reported that the incident occurred during Trepy’s break following Cagliari’s Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo, while other reports also placed the incident in the Costa Smeralda area.
The seriousness of the situation has prompted concern around Cagliari, particularly given Trepy’s emergence as one of the club’s promising young players. The club has, however, refrained from releasing further medical information and has urged supporters to respect the privacy of the player and his relatives.
Trepy’s Rapid Rise at Cagliari
Trepy was born in France in May 2006 and developed initially at US Créteil-Lusitanos before joining Cagliari’s youth system. He progressed through the club’s academy and became an important member of the Primavera side.
His breakthrough came during the 2024-25 campaign when he helped Cagliari’s Primavera team win the Coppa Italia Primavera. Trepy scored in the final as Cagliari defeated AC Milan 3-0, contributing to the club’s first triumph in the competition.

He subsequently made the jump to senior football and announced himself dramatically in January 2026. Trepy made his Serie A debut against Cremonese on January 8 and scored just four minutes after coming on, rescuing a 2-2 draw for Cagliari with an 88th-minute equaliser.
He went on to make further appearances in Italy’s top flight, scoring once in his first Serie A campaign. His progress earned him a place in Cagliari’s senior squad, with the club listing him as a forward wearing the number 37 shirt.
For now, football has understandably taken a back seat as attention remains firmly on Trepy’s health. Cagliari concluded its statement by saying the club’s thoughts are with the young forward and his family and that further information will be provided when available.
