Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that the upcoming season could be his final one in professional football, offering the clearest indication yet that his extraordinary career may be approaching its conclusion.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain made the revelation while reflecting on life after football and the challenge of replacing a sport that has consumed more than two decades of his life.
“I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy, but to tell you just one thing is hard because football could leave a big hole.
“You have to fill your time in various ways, not just one, and you also have more fun, travel more because, after all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”

Ronaldo’s comments come as he prepares to continue playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, despite increasing speculation over when he will finally walk away from the game. He remains under contract with the Saudi club until 2027, meaning the 2026-27 campaign could potentially become his farewell season.
The Portugal star has also spoken about wanting to leave the game with a legacy that reflects his remarkable achievements. He is approaching the extraordinary milestone of 1,000 career goals, having already scored 976 goals for club and country. That leaves him just 24 goals short of the landmark.
A Career Built On Records
Ronaldo’s career began at Sporting CP before his move to Manchester United established him as one of the world’s leading forwards. His first spell at Old Trafford was followed by a record-breaking nine years at Real Madrid, where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 451 competitive goals.

Yet the one major prize missing from his collection is the FIFA World Cup. Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 tournament means Ronaldo will not have another World Cup opportunity if he retires after the coming season.

Ronaldo’s thoughts on retirement arrive just days after another major chapter in his personal life. He married his longtime partner Georgina Rodriguez in a private civil ceremony in Cascais, Portugal, on August 11. The couple, who have been together since 2016, celebrated with their children in an intimate setting.
His comments suggest that family life, travel and new interests could form a major part of his post-football future. Ronaldo has previously invested heavily in business ventures, including hotels, fashion and health and fitness projects, giving him several avenues beyond the pitch.
Still, he acknowledged that replacing football will not be straightforward.
