Ghana Premier League side Karela United have been hit with a FIFA registration ban after failing to settle a financial obligation owed to player Sana Camara, according to a FIFA disciplinary communication dated August 17, 2026.

The FIFA notice, issued through the governing body’s Legal Portal, states that Karela United have not complied with an earlier decision requiring the club to fulfil its financial obligations towards Camara under case number FPSD-23160.

As a result, FIFA has implemented a ban preventing the Ghana Premier League club from registering new players at both international and national levels. The restriction will remain in force until the outstanding amount is paid in full and can last for a maximum of three consecutive registration periods.

FIFA’s Head of Disciplinary, Américo Espallargas, has also instructed the Ghana Football Association to immediately implement the ban at the national level if it has not already done so.

The development comes at a difficult time for Karela United, who have been active in the transfer market as they prepare for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season. The club recently announced the signing of Wisdom Jonas Manyina before unveiling two additional defenders, Edmund Afurapoe and Frank Ackom.

Karela United are owned by Ghanaian politician and Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, who has been involved in the club’s ownership and efforts to strengthen its position in Ghanaian football.

Who is Sana Camara?

Sana Camara is a footballer who has been associated with Karela United and whose financial dispute with the club has now resulted in FIFA activating the registration restriction.

His name appears as the creditor in FIFA’s latest communication, which specifically states that Karela had not complied with its financial obligations towards him.

The exact amount owed to Camara has not been disclosed in FIFA’s latest letter concerning the issue. The document instead makes clear that the outstanding obligation arises from an earlier FIFA decision and that the registration ban will remain until the amount due is paid.

Camara’s case therefore becomes a significant administrative issue for Karela United as the club attempts to complete its preparations for the new campaign. The sanction is not merely a warning, as FIFA has already activated the restriction and directed the GFA to enforce it domestically.

Transfer Activity Now Under Threat

The timing of the ban is particularly notable because Karela United have been busy rebuilding their squad.

On the same day the club announced Wisdom Jonas Manyina, Karela confirmed the arrivals of defenders Edmund Afurapoe and Frank Ackom. Afurapoe joins from Eleven Wonders, with the club describing the centre-back as an experienced defender expected to bring leadership and greater solidity to the backline.

Ackom, meanwhile, joins from Nsuapon Fidelity. His arrival, alongside Afurapoe’s, reflects Karela’s efforts to strengthen their defence before the start of the new season.

The FIFA restriction could now complicate further recruitment unless the club resolves its outstanding obligation to Camara. The critical question will also be whether the recently announced signings have been validly registered before the ban was activated.

If the debt remains unpaid, FIFA’s decision allows the restriction to remain in place for up to three consecutive registration periods, potentially limiting Karela United’s ability to add players well beyond the opening weeks of the new season.
