Netflix is set to bring the beloved 1980s and 1990s sitcom A Different World back to screens with a new sequel series that premieres on September 24, 2026. The date marks exactly 39 years since the original series debuted on NBC as a spin-off of The Cosby Show.

The new half-hour single-camera comedy returns to the fictional Hillman College, an HBCU that served as the vibrant backdrop for stories of Black student life, friendship, romance, and personal growth.

At the center of the series is Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah is the free-spirited, well-intentioned, and rebellious youngest daughter of original series favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne. As she begins her freshman year at her parents’ alma mater, she struggles to escape their long shadow while forging her own path and legacy.

The official description paints her as a lovingly sheltered young woman with a flair for the spotlight and a big heart who is still figuring out who she wants to become.

Joining Deborah is a new generation of Hillman students designed to reflect the breadth of contemporary Black life on campus. Alijah Kai portrays Rashida Duvall, a first-generation criminal justice major. Cornell Young IV plays Shaquille Johnson, a five-star athlete navigating questions of legacy. Jordan Aaron Hall is Amir Rodale, a sharp psychology major who is better at solving others’ problems than his own.

Kennedi Reece stars as Hazel Henry, a church-raised small-town girl defining her own values. Chibuikem Uche takes on the role of Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to pursue his vision.

Several original cast members are returning to Hillman. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprise their iconic roles as Whitley and Dwayne. Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Charnele Brown as Kimberly Reese, and Jenifer Lewis as Professor Dorothy Dandridge Davenport.

Jada Pinkett Smith is also back as Lena James. Debbie Allen, who produced and directed many episodes of the original series, serves as an executive producer and directs the premiere episode, appearing as Dr. Langhorne, an academic advisor.

The series is created, written, and showrun by Felicia Pride, with executive producers including Debbie Allen, Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers. Brandy Norwood performs the theme song.

Production filmed in Atlanta from February to May 2026 after earlier development that included a pilot order in 2025 and a series pickup later that year. The first season consists of 10 episodes, all releasing on premiere day in the typical Netflix binge model.

The original A Different World, which ran from 1987 to 1993, evolved beyond its initial focus on Denise Huxtable into a groundbreaking ensemble comedy that tackled serious issues including apartheid, date rape, the Gulf War, and the AIDS crisis while celebrating HBCU culture, Black excellence, and the everyday experiences of young adults.
