Young Apostles captain Ramzy Abubakar says the club are determined to take a significant step forward in the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season after narrowly avoiding relegation last term.

The Wenchi-based side secured their top-flight status on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign, finishing 13th, and Abubakar believes that experience has provided the team with an important lesson ahead of their third consecutive Premier League campaign. “We’ve learnt a lot from last season, and we’re ready to step up this season,” the captain said.

Young Apostles earned promotion to the Premier League in 2024 after defeating Techiman Heroes on penalties in the Division One playoff. Their promotion made them the first club from Wenchi to reach Ghana’s top flight.

Having now spent two seasons competing against Ghana’s established top-flight clubs, Abubakar believes the experience gained should translate into a stronger campaign this time around.

The captain insists the team will approach the new season with a different mentality, determined to avoid another prolonged battle against relegation.

‘We Won’t Wait For The Final Games’

Abubakar says Young Apostles are keen to establish their position in the league much earlier rather than leave their survival hopes until the closing stages of the campaign.

“We’re beginning this season with power. We won’t wait for the final games of the season to determine our fate or staying in the GPL or going down. We won’t allow it that way.”

That ambition comes after a campaign in which the club had to fight until the final day to guarantee their place in the division.

Young Apostles showed flashes of their potential during the 2025/26 season, including a 3-1 home victory over Vision FC in May that strengthened their survival bid.

Their home form has also emerged as an important asset. The Wenchi Sports Stadium has provided the club with a strong platform since their arrival in the Premier League, with the team recording nine home wins during the 2025/26 campaign according to season records.

Despite that, the stadium wasn’t part of the 13 stadia that received approval from Ghana Football Association after inspection.

However, the club’s Communications and Brand Manager, Vincent Henneh revealed exclusively to the Vault News Network that work is ongoing at the stadium and it should be enough to have it approved soon for use.

For Abubakar, however, the objective is no longer simply to survive.

Top four and FA Cup ambition

The Young Apostles captain has set ambitious targets for the upcoming campaign, with a top-four finish the preferred objective and a place in the top seven regarded as the minimum acceptable outcome. “We have a lot of expectations. We hope to finish in the top four or, worst, top seven and reach either the quarter-finals or semi-final of the MTN FA Cup,” Abubakar said.

Those targets would represent a considerable improvement on last season’s 13th-place finish and underline the club’s desire to move from survival contenders into the upper half of the Premier League table.

Young Apostles’ rise to the top flight has been relatively rapid. The club, founded in 2012, progressed through Ghana’s lower divisions before securing promotion in 2024 after topping Division One Zone 1B and defeating Techiman Heroes in the decisive playoff.

The experience of their first two Premier League seasons will now be tested against higher expectations. Avoiding relegation will no longer be enough if Abubakar’s targets are to be achieved.

Young Apostles will begin their 2026/27 Premier League campaign away from home against Vision FC, with the new season scheduled to commence on the weekend of September 4 – 7.

The opening fixture offers an immediate opportunity for the Wenchi club to demonstrate whether their new mentality can produce a different outcome.

After surviving by the narrowest of margins last season, Young Apostles are now aiming to make their third Premier League campaign the one in which they establish themselves as a genuine force in Ghana’s top flight.
