Tim Curry, the British actor whose flamboyant performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show made him a cult icon, died Tuesday at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles.

He was 80. His longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz confirmed the news, stating that he passed away peacefully. No cause of death was immediately disclosed.

Curry had lived with the lasting effects of a major stroke suffered in 2012, which left him using a wheelchair and limited his physical roles in later years. He continued working primarily through voice acting and made occasional appearances, including a return to the big screen in the 2024 horror film Stream.

In his 2025 memoir Vagabond, he reflected on the long recovery process with characteristic candor and resilience.

Born Timothy James Curry on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England, he grew up in a family that valued music and performance. His father, a Royal Navy chaplain, died when Curry was 12, after which the family settled in South London.

He trained as an actor and singer, developing the rich baritone and expressive range that would define his career across stage, film, television, and animation.

Curry first originated the role of the “sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania” in the 1973 London stage production of The Rocky Horror Show. He carried the character to Los Angeles, Broadway, and the 1975 film adaptation directed by Jim Sharman. The movie, initially a commercial disappointment, became a midnight-screening phenomenon that still draws costumed audiences decades later.

Curry’s performance equal parts seductive, theatrical, and menacing cemented his reputation for embracing eccentricity without apology.

Beyond Rocky Horror

Beyond Rocky Horror, Curry specialized in memorable villains and comic eccentrics. He played the devilish butler Wadsworth in the 1985 film Clue, the hotel concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and the terrifying Pennywise the Clown in the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It.

On stage he earned three Tony Award nominations for Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Spamalot and received a Daytime Emmy for his work as Captain Hook in the animated series Peter Pan and the Pirates.

Voice acting became an especially important part of his later career and a lasting gift to generations of younger audiences. Fans and tributes circulating after his death highlighted a wide range of roles that showcased his vocal versatility.

He voiced the Mouse King in Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001), the sinister Ben Ravencroft in Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999), Emperor Doviculus in the video game Brütal Legend (2009), the feline Prince in Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006), Drake in The Pebble and the Penguin (1995), Zimbo in Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Worthington Dubois in Phineas and Ferb, and Evil Manta in the animated The Little Mermaid series.

He also lent his voice to Chancellor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and numerous other projects. A popular social media tribute video compiling these performances underscored how thoroughly Curry’s distinctive delivery had shaped childhoods and pop culture.

Colleagues remembered him as both a larger-than-life performer and a private, generous person. Actor Michael McKean, a longtime friend, wrote that their final conversations centered on “life and love and laughter,” adding that Curry’s physical struggles had ended and that the greater blessing was having known him.

Grand Central Publishing, which released his memoir, described him as “a singular talent whose extraordinary career left an indelible mark on generations of audiences.”

Curry never married and had no children. He kept his personal life largely out of the public eye, though in Vagabond he acknowledged experiences of love, heartbreak, and the ordinary wreckage of living. He is survived by a wide circle of friends, collaborators, and the countless fans who discovered his work through midnight movies, Saturday-morning cartoons, or late-night television.

In the hours after the announcement, social media filled with clips of his most memorable scenes and voice performances. Many recalled how his work as Frank-N-Furter offered early permission for theatrical self-expression, while others pointed to the sheer range of characters he inhabited from cartoon penguins to galactic emperors. The common thread was gratitude for an actor who treated every role, however outlandish, with total commitment.

Tim Curry’s career spanned more than five decades and crossed nearly every medium. He specialized in the exaggerated, the camp, and the deliciously sinister, yet always grounded those performances in precise technique and an unmistakable voice.

That voice, whether singing “Sweet Transvestite,” delivering a dry one-liner as a hotel manager, or growling threats as an animated villain, remains instantly recognizable. For many, it was the soundtrack of childhood afternoons and midnight cult rituals alike.

He leaves behind a body of work that continues to find new audiences. The Rocky Horror Picture Show still screens regularly. His animated performances still play on streaming platforms and cable channels. And the tributes that followed his death reaffirm that the characters he created or the characters he inhabited so completely have taken on lives of their own.

In the end, Tim Curry did what the best character actors do: he made the strange feel familiar, the frightening feel entertaining, and the theatrical feel essential.
