Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have turned 91 today, marking another significant milestone in the history of one of Ghana and Africa’s most decorated football clubs.

The Porcupine Warriors are celebrating their anniversary on August 31, 2026, 91 years after the club was formally inaugurated in Kumasi under the blessing of the then Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II.

The club’s origins date back to 1935, when a group of 13 young Ashanti men led by Kwasi Kumah, with the support of L.Y. Asamoah, laid the foundations for the club.

Initially known as Ashanti United, the club later became Asante Kotoko, with the porcupine chosen as a symbol of the Asante warrior spirit.

Over nine decades, Kotoko have developed into a dominant force in Ghanaian football while establishing a formidable reputation on the African continent.

The 91st anniversary comes just days after the Porcupine Warriors added another trophy to their collection, defeating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties following a goalless draw to win the 2026 Democracy Cup at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

In a statement marking the milestone, the Asante Kotoko Board of Directors congratulated the entire Kotoko fraternity while reflecting on the club’s enduring identity.

“Over nine decades, Asante Kotoko has embodied the warrior spirit of the Asante Kingdom and its allies, carrying forward a legacy built on strength, unity of purpose and invincibility.”

A Legacy Written in Trophies

The club’s 91-year journey has been defined by an impressive collection of domestic and continental honours.

Kotoko have won a record 24 Ghana Premier League titles and two African Cup of Champions Clubs titles, now recognised as the CAF Champions League, in 1970 and 1983.

The Porcupine Warriors remain the only Ghanaian club to have won Africa’s premier club competition twice, a record that has cemented their place among the continent’s historic football institutions.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics also recognised Kotoko’s continental stature by naming the club the African Club of the 20th Century.

The anniversary statement highlighted the scale of that achievement, pointing to a trophy cabinet that has placed the club among African football’s most successful sides. “Our trophy cabinet places the Club among the most decorated in African football history, with a record haul across domestic and continental competitions.”

Kotoko’s latest piece of silverware arrived on August 28, when they defeated Hearts of Oak in a penalty shootout to win the 2026 Democracy Cup.

Goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad was the hero, saving two penalties as Kotoko converted four of their spot-kicks to secure a 4-1 victory.

The triumph made the Porcupine Warriors two-time Democracy Cup winners after their success in the inaugural edition in 2024.

Honouring the Past, Looking to the Future

As part of the anniversary reflection, Kotoko paid tribute to generations of players, coaches and supporters who have contributed to the club’s remarkable story.

Among the legends recognised were Osman Seidu Maada, popularly known as Baba Yara, Dogo Moro, Osei Kofi, Ibrahim Sunday, Malik Jabir, Robert Mensah, Abdul Razak and Opoku Afriyie.

The Board acknowledged the lasting contribution of those who have worn the famous red jersey and helped build the club’s identity across different generations. “We salute every player who has donned our enviable red jersey; every coach who has guided the team, and every supporter who has waved the unflinching hope and support to the Club over the decades.”

While celebrating its past, Kotoko also used the occasion to outline its ambitions for the years ahead.

The club said it remains determined to strengthen its structures through modern infrastructure and technology as it seeks to compete at the highest levels and win more honours. “As we mark this momentous 91st birthday, we are more resolved than ever to move into the future with greater fortitude, purpose and character.”

The Board also expressed gratitude to the club’s sole shareholder and Life Patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his support, while acknowledging sponsors and journalists who have contributed to documenting Kotoko’s journey.

After 91 years, Asante Kotoko’s story remains one of ambition, success, setbacks and enduring loyalty. As the Porcupine Warriors begin their 92nd year, the club’s focus now shifts from celebrating its remarkable past to building a future capable of sustaining its place among Ghana’s football giants.
