Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies have set up a semi-final encounter with FC Dynamique of Benin in the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers after completing a perfect group-stage campaign in Ouagadougou.

Ampem Darkoa sealed their place in the last four by coming from behind to beat Nigerian champions Edo Queens 2-1 in their final Group B fixture on Sunday. The victory saw the Ghanaian side finish top of the group with three wins from three matches.

The semi-final clash with FC Dynamique presents Ampem Darkoa with an opportunity to move within one victory of securing the WAFU B ticket to the CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament.

Ampem Darkoa were forced to show their resilience against Edo Queens after Doosuur Anastasia gave the Nigerian champions the lead in the 11th minute.

The Ghanaian champions responded after the break, levelling shortly after half-time before completing the comeback with 12 minutes remaining.

Milot Abena Pokuaa played a key role in the winning goal, with her dangerous free-kick causing problems inside the Edo Queens penalty area and eventually resulting in an own goal.

The victory capped an impressive group campaign for Ampem Darkoa, who scored seven goals and conceded just once across their three matches. They had earlier defeated ASEC Mimosas and AS Garde Nationale to establish themselves as the only team in the group to maintain a perfect record.

FC Dynamique Advance Despite Goalless Group Stage

FC Dynamique secured their place in the semi-finals as Group A runners-up despite failing to score in either of their two matches.

The Beninese side began their campaign with a goalless draw against ASKO de Kara, leaving them with just one point from the group stage. They nevertheless progressed after ASKO suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to hosts USFA in their final group game.

The result allowed Dynamique to finish second and earn a meeting with an Ampem Darkoa side that has emerged as one of the strongest teams in the competition.

USFA topped Group A with a perfect defensive record, scoring eight goals without conceding, while Edo Queens joined Ampem Darkoa in the semi-finals after finishing second in Group B.

Edo Queens had entered their final group game against Ampem Darkoa with an impressive attacking record. They had opened the tournament with a 7-0 demolition of AS Garde Nationale before defeating ASEC Mimosas 3-1, eventually finishing the group stage with 11 goals.

Their defeat to Ampem Darkoa therefore denied them top spot but did little to diminish their status as one of the leading contenders for the title.

One Victory From Continental Qualification

For Ampem Darkoa, the semi-final carries significance beyond simply reaching the final. The WAFU B qualifiers form part of the qualification pathway for the CAF Women’s Champions League, with the zonal winner earning a place at the continental final tournament.

The CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament is an eight-team competition. The six CAF zonal champions qualify automatically through their respective regional qualifiers, while the defending champions and the club representing the host country complete the line-up.

Consequently, Ampem Darkoa need to win their semi-final against FC Dynamique and then prevail in the final to secure the WAFU B qualification slot.

The Ghanaian champions will therefore enter the semi-final knowing that two victories stand between them and another appearance on the continental stage.

Ampem Darkoa have already demonstrated consistency, attacking efficiency and defensive solidity in Ouagadougou. FC Dynamique, meanwhile, will hope their ability to survive the group stage despite not scoring can translate into a more disciplined and effective performance in the knockout phase.

With a place in the final and the WAFU B ticket at stake, Ampem Darkoa’s semi-final against Dynamique represents the next major test of their continental ambitions.
