MTN Leads GSE Trading as Market Indexes Retreat

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) strengthened significantly at the latest session, but the improvement in market activity came alongside broad declines in the key market indices.

A total of 1,564,606 shares changed hands, representing a market value of GH¢7.57 million. Compared with the previous trading session on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, trading volume increased by 22%, while turnover jumped by a striking 171%.

The surge in turnover indicates that substantially more value was exchanged in the market, even as investors remained cautious across several major counters.

Twenty-seven listed equities participated in the session, with five stocks recording gains and another five ending lower. The balanced number of gainers and losers, however, masked significant price movements among some of the market’s more actively traded companies.

MTN Ghana dominates trading volume

MTN Ghana emerged as the most actively traded equity during the session, recording 546,937 shares in transactions.

The telecom giant was followed by Ecobank Transnational, which recorded 369,371 shares. Ghana Oil Company accounted for 149,417 shares, while CalBank registered 141,275 shares.

MTN Ghana’s strong trading volume is particularly notable because the stock did not escape the day’s broader selling pressure. Its share price declined by 2.07% to close at the session.

The combination of high volume and a price decline suggests that activity around the telecommunications counter was substantial, with investors exchanging a significant number of shares amid changing market positions.

Ecobank Transnational experienced an even sharper decline. The stock fell by 6.63% to GH¢1.55, making it the biggest loser of the session.

Access Bank Ghana also came under pressure, declining by 6.05%. Ghana Oil Company dropped 4.09%, adding to the losses recorded among some of the market’s actively traded counters.

Digicut leads the gainers

While several major stocks recorded losses, some counters attracted stronger buying interest.

Digicut Production & Advertising topped the gainers after its share price climbed 8.33% to GH¢0.39. Dannex Ayrton Starwin followed with a 4.27% increase, while Hords gained 3.08%.

GCB Bank also recorded a positive session, rising 2.8%.

The performance of GCB Bank is noteworthy within the banking segment, particularly because financial stocks as a group recorded a decline during the session. The contrasting movements highlight the uneven performance currently emerging among individual listed financial institutions.

Five equities gained while five declined, leaving the market with a relatively even split between positive and negative price movements.

Composite Index suffers another setback

Despite the sharp improvement in turnover, the benchmark GSE Composite Index suffered another decline.

The GSE-CI dropped 191.22 points, equivalent to 1.33%, to close at 14,161.94 points.

The latest decline adds to the pressure recorded over shorter investment periods. The index has now lost 4% over one week and 6.65% over four weeks.

Yet the longer-term picture remains substantially different. Despite the recent weakness, the Composite Index is still up 61.48% since the beginning of the year.

That wide gap between recent losses and year-to-date gains shows how strongly the market has performed over the broader period, even as investors have recently faced a period of declining prices.

Financial stocks also retreat

The GSE Financial Stocks Index followed the broader market lower.

The index declined by 1.08% to close at 7,389.75 points. Its one-week performance shows a 4.7% decline, while the four-week loss stands at 7.44%.

Similar to the Composite Index, however, the Financial Stocks Index remains firmly in positive territory on a year-to-date basis, recording a gain of 59.02%.

The latest movement comes as investors reassess valuations and positions within the financial sector, where individual banks have continued to post differing share-price performances.

Market value remains substantial

Despite the latest decline in the indices, the Ghana Stock Exchange continues to command a substantial market valuation.

Total market capitalisation stood at GH¢268.4 billion, equivalent to approximately US$23.3 billion.

The latest session therefore presents a mixed picture. Trading activity strengthened sharply, turnover jumped by 171%, and more than 1.56 million shares changed hands. At the same time, the benchmark indices fell as several heavily traded stocks recorded notable losses.

MTN Ghana’s position as the session’s volume leader, alongside the sharp movement in Ecobank Transnational and Access Bank Ghana, points to active repositioning across key counters.
