Analyst Calls for Tactical Timing in Gold Trading

Gold Reserves

Data scientist, Mr. Alfred Appiah has called on the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to adopt tactical timing in its gold trading strategies to prevent unnecessary financial losses under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

According to Appiah, moving away from the rigid habit of immediately liquidating acquired gold reserves will preserve state capital while maximizing foreign exchange (forex) value for the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

“GoldBod buys gold at $5,000 an ounce and the price subsequently falls to $4,500. Selling immediately still generates forex, but it locks in a $500 loss per ounce. Across tonnes of gold, that can become a very large loss.”

Whie expanding on this position, Appiah explained that while the DGPP historically achieved its core objective of supplying vital forex to the central bank, the operational approach created substantial downside risks.

Under the legacy structure operating through 2025, gold was exported and liquidated immediately upon acquisition regardless of prevailing global commodity prices.

While this rapid liquidation satisfied immediate forex demands, it routinely locked in severe financial losses whenever world gold prices experienced sharp temporary dips.

As GoldBod assumes control across the entire precious minerals value chain in 2026, shifting toward active market positioning holding inventory during transient price slumps and selling when market conditions recover is critical to mitigating fiscal leaks.

Historical Mechanics of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme

Under the operational model utilized in 2025 and earlier years, the primary mandate assigned to the DGPP was forex generation above all other commercial considerations. Gold was regularly aggregated from local producers and exported on behalf of the Bank of Ghana to replenish international reserves and support local currency stability.

Because foreign exchange was required urgently to manage macroeconomic pressures, the central bank mandated immediate liquidations upon delivery.

This forced liquidation model meant that market timing played virtually no role in the execution of trade settlements.

Even when international bullion prices dropped significantly below local procurement costs, transactions were finalized to satisfy short-term liquidity demands.

Consequently, while the central bank successfully bolstered its foreign currency accounts, the price differentials recorded on rapid trades accumulated into substantial financial losses across multiple metric tonnes of exported gold.

Transitioning to Value Chain Management in 2026

The institutional framework surrounding Ghana’s gold trade underwent a structural shift in 2026 as GoldBod assumed full oversight across the entire value chain.

Moving beyond the legacy setup where the institution acted primarily as a buying agent, GoldBod’s expanded operational mandate allows it to manage aggregation, assaying, holding, and final market disposition.

This structural change provides the legal and operational flexibility necessary to rethink how export sales are scheduled.

With institutional reforms now active, analysts and market watchers have pushed for modern treasury techniques within the state enterprise.

Rather than treating gold purely as an instant cash-conversion asset, GoldBod is being urged to manage its inventory like a commercial commodity trader.

By coordinating trade execution with broader market trends, GoldBod can fulfill its obligations to national forex reserves without sacrificing financial sustainability.

Mitigating Losses Through Tactical Position Holding

The economic rationale for adopting strategic holding periods relies on avoiding forced sales during market troughs. When gold is procured at a high price baseline, subsequent market corrections create temporary paper losses.

Liquidating immediately converts those temporary price fluctuations into permanent balance sheet losses.

By implementing position-holding mechanisms, GoldBod can absorb short-term price volatility and delay final disposal until international prices recover to favorable levels.

Industry analysts who have scrutinised the public balance sheets emphasize that “under the new model, GoldBod may therefore hold some positions rather than immediately selling at unfavourable prices,” creating a commercial buffer that protects state revenues while preserving the overall integrity of the domestic purchase framework.
