The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) opened the week on a stronger footing as buying activity accelerated sharply, lifting both trading volumes and market indices while seven listed equities recorded gains.
Investors traded 3,446,051 shares valued at GH¢17.65 million during the session, marking a significant improvement over the previous trading day on Friday, October 2. Trading volume jumped by 234%, while turnover surged by 301%, pointing to a notable increase in market activity as investors returned to the equities market.
The performance provided a positive start to the week after the GSE had recently experienced pressure across its broader market indicators. The latest session suggests that investor interest remains strong in selected counters, even as the market continues to contend with recent short-term losses.
Seven Stocks Push GSE Into Positive Territory
Trading activity ended with 29 GSE-listed equities participating in the session. Seven stocks recorded price gains, while only two counters closed lower.
Hords emerged as the day’s strongest performer, advancing 8.33% to close at GH¢0.78 per share. The sharp gain placed the company at the top of the day’s winners as investors pushed its share price higher.
Intravenous Infusions followed closely with an 8.16% gain. Digicut Production & Advertising also attracted strong buying interest, rising 5.88%, while Ghana Oil Company gained 3.89%.
The breadth of the gains indicates that positive sentiment was not limited to a single stock. Although the number of gainers remained relatively modest compared with the total number of participating equities, the strong percentage increases recorded by some counters helped lift the broader market.
The day’s two decliners were Dannex Ayrton Starwin and Kasapreko. Dannex Ayrton Starwin suffered the steeper decline, falling 8.93%, while Kasapreko dropped 1.63%.
Such contrasting movements underline the selective nature of current trading on the GSE, with investors appearing to concentrate their attention on particular stocks rather than applying uniform buying or selling pressure across the market.
MTN Ghana Commands Trading Activity
MTN Ghana once again dominated the session in terms of trading volume, with 2.38 million shares changing hands.
The telecommunications giant was followed by CalBank, which recorded 240,838 traded shares. Intravenous Infusions ranked third with 178,043 shares, while Digicut Production & Advertising recorded 167,185 shares.
MTN Ghana’s dominant contribution to total market volume played a major role in the sharp improvement recorded during the session. The concentration of trading in a highly liquid counter also highlights the continued importance of large-cap and actively traded stocks to overall GSE market activity.
The jump in turnover is equally significant because it indicates that the stronger activity was not simply the result of a few low-value transactions. Investors generated GH¢17.65 million in market value, helping push the exchange’s total capitalization higher.
GSE Composite Index Reclaims Ground
The stronger trading session translated into gains across the major GSE indices.
The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) rose by 45.12 points, equivalent to a 0.32% increase, to close at 14,116.56.
Despite the daily improvement, the index remains under pressure over shorter periods. It recorded a one-week loss of 0.3% and a four-week decline of 4.71%.
Its year-to-date performance, however, remains firmly positive, with the GSE-CI posting a 60.96% gain.
That substantial annual return continues to demonstrate how far Ghanaian equities have advanced since the beginning of the year, even with the market experiencing periodic corrections and profit-taking.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index also strengthened during the session, climbing 0.9% to 7,520.42 points.
The financial index recorded a marginal one-week decline of 0.03% and a four-week loss of 3.81%. Its year-to-date performance remained impressive at 61.83%, reflecting the strong gains recorded by financial stocks over the broader 2026 trading period.
Market Capitalisation Adds GH¢1.6 Billion
The renewed buying activity also lifted the total market capitalization of the Ghana Stock Exchange.
Market capitalization increased from GH¢267.7 billion to GH¢269.3 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.9 billion.
The GH¢1.6 billion increase provides another indication of the impact of the day’s positive price movements. While one trading session does not establish a sustained market reversal, the improvement adds fresh momentum to a market that has delivered substantial returns over the year.
Investors will now be watching whether the stronger opening can translate into sustained activity during subsequent sessions.
The GSE’s recent performance has shown that significant gains can coexist with sharp short-term corrections. With the Composite Index still carrying a 60.96% year-to-date gain, investors may remain focused on identifying stocks with stronger earnings prospects, liquidity and valuation support.
The latest session therefore gives the market a welcome boost, but sustaining the momentum will require continued investor participation.
If the increased volume and turnover persist, the GSE could see renewed attention from investors looking for opportunities after the recent pullback in its major indices.
