Absa Ghana Unveils New Board Chair as New Growth Phase Begins

Stephen Ato Frimpong, New Board Chair, Absa Ghana

Absa Bank Ghana Limited has entered a new chapter in its boardroom, with Stephen Ato Frimpong taking over as Board Chair effective October 1, 2026.

The appointment places an experienced finance, audit, risk and corporate governance professional at the helm of one of Ghana’s major banking institutions at a time when strong oversight and strategic leadership remain critical to the sector.

Mr Frimpong’s elevation follows the conclusion of Mrs Frances Adu-Mante’s tenure as Board Chair on September 30, 2026. His appointment also marks a significant progression from his earlier role as an Independent Non-Executive Director on the bank’s board.

Stephen Frimpong Steps Into Absa Ghana’s Top Board Role

Mr Frimpong joined the Absa Bank Ghana board on March 1, 2021, bringing extensive experience accumulated across finance, audit, business operations, risk management and corporate governance.

His five-year journey on the board has exposed him to several of the bank’s most important oversight functions. He has chaired the Board Audit Committee and the Board Social, Sustainability and Ethics Committee, while previously serving as Chair of the Board Risk Committee.

He has also served on the Board Remuneration Committee and the Board Information Technology, Cybersecurity and Payment Systems Committee.

That broad committee experience gives Mr Frimpong an unusually wide understanding of the bank’s operations and the risks facing modern financial institutions.

His professional background spans corporate governance, audit, finance, business operations, risk management, compliance, ethics, fraud investigations, information technology, cybersecurity and data privacy.

Global Experience Comes Into Focus

A major feature of Mr Frimpong’s professional profile is his international corporate experience.

Before retiring in 2020, he served as Vice President and Chief Audit Executive at Kimberly-Clark Corporation in the United States. In that position, he led the company’s global internal audit function.

His responsibilities extended beyond conventional audit oversight. He also supported the company’s compliance programmes and ethics-related investigations, giving him exposure to complex governance issues within a large multinational organisation.

That experience could prove valuable as Absa Ghana continues to operate in an increasingly technology-driven banking environment.

Cybersecurity, data privacy, digital payments, fraud prevention and regulatory compliance have become central to banking operations. Board-level understanding of these areas is increasingly important as banks expand digital services and manage new forms of financial risk.

Mr Frimpong’s background places these issues firmly within his area of expertise.

A Career Built Around Finance and Governance

Mr Frimpong’s academic and professional credentials further strengthen his profile.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Cape Coast and a Master of Accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin in the United States.

He is also a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant.

The combination of accounting expertise, international corporate experience and board-level exposure has shaped a career heavily focused on accountability and institutional oversight.

His appointment therefore represents more than a change in the name occupying Absa Ghana’s board chair position. It brings a seasoned governance professional into a role responsible for helping guide the bank’s strategic direction and board oversight.

Adu-Mante’s Chapter Comes To An End

While Mr Frimpong begins his tenure, Absa Bank Ghana has also formally closed a significant chapter under Mrs Frances Adu-Mante.

Mrs Adu-Mante joined the bank’s board as an Independent Non-Executive Director in September 2017 and became Board Chair in January 2020.

During her tenure, she provided leadership at board level through a period of significant change in Ghana’s financial services industry.

Absa Bank Ghana expressed its appreciation to Mrs Adu-Mante for her leadership, service and contribution to the bank.

Her departure creates room for a new leadership approach under Mr Frimpong as the bank looks ahead.

Absa Ghana Looks Toward Its Next Growth Phase

The change in board leadership comes with the bank positioning itself for its next phase of growth.

The board, management and staff have congratulated Mr Frimpong on his appointment and expressed confidence in his leadership as the bank enters this new phase.

His immediate challenge will be to combine his deep experience in governance and risk with the broader strategic ambitions of Absa Bank Ghana.

The banking industry is changing rapidly, with digital transformation, cybersecurity, regulatory expectations, customer experience and competition reshaping how financial institutions operate.

Against that backdrop, the leadership of a bank’s board can have a significant influence on how effectively it balances growth with sound governance.

Mr Frimpong’s record across audit, risk, compliance, technology and ethics gives him a strong foundation as he takes on the responsibility.

His appointment signals a deliberate move by Absa Bank Ghana to place extensive governance and financial expertise at the centre of its board leadership.

As he assumes the chairmanship, attention will now turn to how his experience translates into strategic oversight and supports Absa Ghana’s ambitions in the years ahead.
