University of Ghana

The University of Ghana has postponed the reopening of the 2026/2027 academic year, which was scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026, following disruptions linked to the ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

In an official notice, the University’s Management announced that, “a revised reopening date would be communicated to students in due course.” The announcement was signed by Professor Gordon A. Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs.

The postponement follows the industrial action, which has disrupted administrative operations and affected essential services across public universities. The University of Ghana has already experienced difficulties with online registration as administrators continue their strike.

Meanwhile, management has urged students to complete the required online registration procedures while awaiting further instructions. The process is important for securing places in classes and ensuring eligibility for the university’s forthcoming random bed allocation exercise.

“Management sincerely regrets any inconvenience this postponement may cause and appreciates the patience and understanding of students as arrangements are made for the reopening.”

The University has not announced a new date for students to return to campus. Consequently, students have been advised to follow official communications for updates on the academic calendar and registration arrangements.

KNUST Postpones 2026/2027 Academic Year Reopening

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has indefinitely postponed the reopening of the 2026/2027 academic year, citing operational disruptions caused by the ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

In a statement, the university announced that the reopening, originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, would not proceed as planned. Management indicated that a revised date would be communicated when arrangements have been finalised.

The university’s management explained that “the disruption has made it necessary to suspend the planned reopening until further notice.” Students, parents, guardians and other stakeholders have therefore been advised to take note of the change.

The statement, signed by University Relations Officer Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe on behalf of the Registrar, also acknowledged the inconvenience the postponement could cause to members of the university community.

“The University Management will provide further updates on the revised re-opening date in due course.”

KNUST has not specified when students will be expected to return to campus. The indefinite postponement leaves the university community awaiting further communication as the dispute between university administrators and the government remains unresolved.

GAUA Blames Unresolved Grievances For University Disruptions

The General Secretary of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), Charles Kojo Aidoo blamed the disruption of academic activities at public universities on the government’s failure to resolve the association’s longstanding grievances, despite months of engagement with relevant institutions.

Referencing the current press releases by KNUST and UG, Mr Aidoo disclosed that discussions with the Ministry of Employment and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission have yielded no meaningful resolution, prompting the association to maintain its industrial action, which was reactivated on September 15.

Mr Aidoo explained that the association submitted several grievances, including concerns over benefits and conditions of service, but emphasised that the dispute extends beyond financial demands. According to him, some issues have already been agreed upon but remain unimplemented.

“Not even a single one of them has been addressed,” the GAUA General Secretary hinted, referring to the outstanding grievances submitted to the relevant authorities.

He disclosed that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has indicated that the outstanding matters would be resolved by the end of October. The association, he noted, is waiting for the commission to invite its representatives for further engagement.

Meanwhile, Mr Aidoo acknowledged the consequences of the strike for students and university communities, admitting that administrators are also affected because their children attended public universities.

“”We must survive to take care of our families. Though we’ve talked for over six years with no action, we still hope for a resolution and we can no longer ignore.”

Charles Kojo Aidoo

The GAUA General Secretary also raised concerns about the “apartheid system where one senior member is regarded superior than the other.” He argued that professionals such as accountants, lawyers, medical doctors, engineers, human resource specialists and public relations practitioners are being undervalued within the university system.

Mr Aidoo cautioned that the disparities could deepen divisions among university employees and also undermine professional morale. He attributed the situation to policies that began under previous administrations and, in his assessment, has persisted under the current government.

Turning to the conditions required for the strike to end, he explained that GAUA has already submitted the issues requiring resolution and is awaiting action from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

He reiterated that members are prepared to return to work once meaningful progress has been made on their demands. Until then, the association would continue waiting for the promised engagement, even as the postponement of reopening dates at major public universities illustrates the growing consequences of the unresolved dispute.
