Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has urged his players to prepare for a physical contest against Brentford when they travel to the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, warning that they cannot afford to be complacent due to their emphatic Champions League victory over LASK Linz.
The Reds head into the Premier League encounter with renewed confidence after recovering from Sunday’s defeat to Manchester City with a 6-3 victory over LASK in the Champions League on Wednesday in Austria.
However, Iraola expects a different kind of challenge against Brentford, whose home ground he believes offers little comfort to visiting teams. “Everyone has to be ready and we need to be ready for a battle at Brentford, where no teams are ever comfortable.”
Liverpool will also have to contend with a demanding fixture schedule, the suspension of midfielder Ryan Gravenberch and concerns surrounding the fitness of several players. These circumstances could force further adjustments as Iraola attempts to maintain the team’s momentum across competitions.
Liverpool Must Build on LASK Victory
Liverpool’s response to their defeat against Manchester City offered encouragement ahead of the weekend, with the six-goal performance against LASK providing a timely boost in confidence.

However, Iraola was careful not to allow the Champions League result to overshadow the importance of the upcoming Premier League fixture. He acknowledged the disappointment of losing against City but welcomed the opportunity to return to action quickly and secure a positive result in Europe.
The manager explained that the Champions League presents a different challenge because every dropped point can prove costly across the competition’s eight-match league phase. “Every time you lose a game, you want to play as quick as possible and in this case it was quite quick and we could have a good performance, a good result, but we were not recovering the points we lost against City,” Iraola remarked.
With Brentford next on the schedule, Iraola will want his players to transfer their attacking confidence into another demanding domestic assignment.
Squad Rotation Crucial Amid Packed Schedule
The Liverpool manager acknowledged that the frequency of matches leaves little time for recovery, making squad rotation essential as the team moves between domestic and European commitments.
Liverpool are expected to make further changes against Brentford before turning their attention to Villarreal, who they face just three days later in the Uefa Champions League. “In this period especially, we are basically playing every three days, almost less than three days and you need more players,” Iraola explained.
He added that the coaching staff had already adjusted the team for the LASK encounter and would need to continue managing the available personnel carefully. “We’ll need to change again at the weekend, we will need to change again when we face Villarreal in another three days,” he said.

The absence of Gravenberch, who was sent off against Manchester City, adds to the selection challenge. Iraola believes every member of the squad must remain prepared to contribute, particularly as the schedule increases the likelihood of changes to the starting lineup.
He also indicated that it was too early to confirm the availability of players who missed the European fixture, with the next training session expected to provide greater clarity. Key players including Dominik Szobozlai, Alexender Isak, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Eketike all remain doubtful for the trip to Brentford.
Iraola did not provide a definitive timeline for Leoni’s return, leaving uncertainty over when the defender might become available again.
Barcola’s Form Offers Encouragement
Meanwhile, Iraola praised Bradley Barcola’s growing confidence following his hat-trick against LASK, although he believes the forward still needs time to reach his best physical condition and establish stronger connections with his teammates.
Barcola arrived at Liverpool without playing any minutes during pre-season and has effectively been using his early competitive appearances to build match fitness.
Despite that disadvantage, the forward delivered an impressive performance against LASK, demonstrating his ability to attack defenders in one-on-one situations and exploit spaces in the opposition’s defence. “It’s always remarkable because he scored three goals in a Champions League game, not a lot of players can say that they have done it,” Iraola said.

However, he identified Barcola’s confidence on the ball as one of the most encouraging aspects of his display.
Iraola also welcomed Jeremie Frimpong’s promising performance against LASK, saying he was happy to have additional options in defence as the team navigates its demanding schedule.
With Liverpool seeking to extend their recovery from the Manchester City defeat, the manager’s priority will be ensuring that his players combine their renewed confidence with the discipline and physical readiness required to overcome Brentford on Saturday.
