Ghana Stock Market Loses Ground as GSE-CI Falls

Ghana’s stock market suffered another setback at the close of trading, with the benchmark Ghana Stock Exchange Composite Index (GSE-CI) declining as market activity slowed sharply and losses among major listed companies weighed on investor sentiment.

The GSE-CI shed 15.07 points, representing a 0.11% decline, to close at 14,148.86 points. The decline came alongside a steep contraction in trading activity, with both the volume of shares exchanged and the total value of transactions falling significantly compared with the previous trading session on Monday, October 19.

Investors traded 1,635,948 shares valued at GH¢8.41 million during the session. This represented a 72% drop in trading volume and a 76% decline in turnover, highlighting a considerable slowdown in activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

Despite the latest dip, the market continues to hold substantial gains accumulated throughout the year. However, the latest figures point to renewed pressure on share prices as several prominent equities ended the session in negative territory.

GSE-CI Slips as Market Momentum Weakens

The decline in the benchmark index adds to the market’s recent short-term losses, with the GSE-CI recording a 1.63% decline over the past week and a 0.96% loss over four weeks.

These figures suggest that the market has struggled to maintain its recent momentum, even as its overall performance remains firmly positive for the year.

The index has gained 61.33% year to date, leaving it significantly above its level at the beginning of 2026. The strong annual performance reflects the considerable appreciation recorded across listed equities during the year, although the latest session shows that the upward trend has not been uninterrupted.

Market capitalisation stood at GH¢267.6 billion, equivalent to approximately US$23 billion, at the close of trading.

The combination of a declining benchmark index and reduced turnover provides a snapshot of a market experiencing weaker activity while attempting to preserve its substantial year-to-date gains.

Financial Stocks Index Also Falls

The financial segment of the market also ended the session in negative territory, with the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) declining by 0.5% to close at 7,453.14 points.

The index recorded a 0.05% loss over one week and a 0.32% decline over four weeks, indicating that financial stocks have also faced some pressure in the short term.

Nevertheless, the GSE-FSI remains up 60.38% since the beginning of the year, demonstrating the substantial gains accumulated by financial sector equities despite recent fluctuations.

The latest decline in the financial stocks benchmark is particularly relevant to investors monitoring the banking and financial services sector, where changes in share prices can influence the overall direction of the market.

With the broader market and the financial stocks index both recording losses, the session ended on a cautious note for equity investors.

GOIL, Digicut and GCB Bank Lead Decliners

Losses among several listed companies contributed to the market’s weaker performance, with Ghana Oil Company emerging as the biggest decliner during the session.

GOIL’s share price fell by 4.33% to close at GH¢5.74. The decline placed the oil marketing company at the bottom of the session’s performance table, making it the most significant loser among the equities traded.

Digicut Production & Advertising followed with a 4.08% decline, reflecting another substantial drop among the day’s underperforming stocks.

GCB Bank also came under pressure, losing 2.13% of its share price, while Ecobank Ghana declined by 1.17%.

The performance of these companies highlights the uneven conditions across the exchange, where some equities continue to attract buying interest while others experience downward price movements.

With five listed equities recording losses against three gainers, the number of declining stocks exceeded the number of advancing stocks during the session.

Meridian-Marshall Leads Three Gainers

While the broader market recorded losses, Meridian-Marshall Holdings emerged as the strongest performer among the session’s gainers.

The company’s share price appreciated by 7.69% to close at GH¢0.14, giving it the largest percentage increase among the equities that advanced.

SIC Insurance Company followed with a 1.87% gain, while MTN Ghana recorded a more modest appreciation of 0.31%.

The gains provided some support to the market, although they were insufficient to prevent the benchmark index from closing lower.

Meridian-Marshall’s performance stood out in particular, as its advance contrasted sharply with the losses recorded by several other listed companies.

The limited number of gainers, however, indicates that upward price movements were concentrated among a small group of equities rather than spread broadly across the market.

MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Volume

MTN Ghana remained the most actively traded stock by volume, with 1.09 million shares changing hands during the session.

The telecommunications company was followed by Kasapreko, which recorded 131,108 shares traded. Ecobank Transnational accounted for 110,367 shares, while CalBank recorded 102,523 shares.

MTN Ghana’s trading volume represented a substantial share of the total 1.64 million shares exchanged during the session, underlining its continued prominence in trading activity on the exchange.

However, the overall market recorded a sharp reduction in activity compared with Monday’s session, suggesting that the volume of transactions had weakened considerably.

The decline in turnover was even steeper than the fall in trading volume, indicating that the total monetary value of shares exchanged contracted more sharply than the number of shares traded.

Market Retains Strong Annual Gains Despite Daily Losses

Ghana’s stock market continues to deliver substantial year-to-date returns despite the latest declines in its benchmark indices.

The GSE-CI’s 61.33% gain and the GSE-FSI’s 60.38% appreciation demonstrate that both the broader equity market and financial stocks remain significantly higher than their levels at the beginning of the year.

However, the latest session reinforces the importance of distinguishing between strong annual returns and short-term market performance.

With trading volume down 72%, turnover declining 76%, and both major indices ending lower, the exchange experienced a marked slowdown in activity alongside modest price declines.

Investors will be watching subsequent trading sessions to determine whether the latest weakness represents a temporary pause after months of strong gains or the beginning of a more sustained period of consolidation.
