Fleetwood Town produced one of the biggest upsets in Carabao Cup history after eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal 5-3 on penalties to secure a historic place in the quarter-finals.

The League Two outfit held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday before maintaining their composure in the shootout to send the heavily favoured visitors crashing out of the competition.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood a shock lead in the 21st minute, capitalising on an opportunity inside the penalty area to put the hosts ahead and ignite hopes of a famous victory against the reigning English champions.

Arsenal, who made several changes to their starting line-up, struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut opportunities during the opening half, with Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch providing a reliable presence between the posts in the opening 45 minutes.

However, the Gunners returned from the break with greater urgency and restored parity through Viktor Gyökeres, who reacted quickest to a goalmouth scramble to score four minutes into the second half.

The equaliser shifted the momentum towards Arsenal, who increased the pressure in search of a winner. However, Lynch remained outstanding, making important interventions to prevent the Premier League side from taking control of the tie.

Arsenal’s task became more complicated when teenage forward Max Dowman was sent off late in the contest. Despite being reduced to 10 men, the visitors continued to threaten, but Fleetwood held firm to force a penalty shootout.

Fleetwood Make History Against Premier League Champions

With no extra time at this stage of the competition and with the contest level after regulation time, the tie proceeded directly to penalties, where Fleetwood demonstrated remarkable composure to complete their historic triumph.

The hosts converted all five of their attempts, while Arsenal failed to maintain the same accuracy. Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz and Gyökeres converted for the Gunners before Bruno Guimarães missed his attempt, allowing Fleetwood to seal a 5-3 victory.

The result represents a landmark achievement for Fleetwood, who had never previously reached the fourth round of the League Cup. Their progression to the quarter-finals marks the furthest they have ever advanced in the competition.

Fleetwood had already enjoyed an impressive run to the fourth round, eliminating three opponents without conceding a goal before earning the opportunity to host Arsenal. Their victory over the reigning champions now stands as the defining moment of their campaign.

For a club competing in England’s fourth tier, the achievement underlines the unpredictable nature of cup football and provides a memorable reward for the players and supporters who witnessed the occasion at Highbury Stadium.

Arsenal Suffer Another Blow Against Lower-League Opposition

The defeat also revives memories of Arsenal’s previous struggles against fourth-tier opposition in the competition. In the 2012-13 League Cup, the Gunners were eliminated by Bradford City in the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw, losing 3-2 on penalties.

That Bradford result remains a notable precedent for Arsenal, although it should not be confused with a reigning Premier League champion being eliminated by a League Two club. Arsenal had not won the Premier League title since 2004 at the time of the Bradford defeat.

Fleetwood’s achievement is therefore significant in its own right, particularly given the difference in resources and league standing between the two clubs.

Arsenal must now turn their attention to their remaining domestic and European commitments after missing the opportunity to pursue another major domestic trophy.

For Fleetwood, meanwhile, the focus shifts to the quarter-finals, where they will hope to extend a remarkable cup journey that has already delivered the biggest night in the club’s history.
